Rick Perry Attack Smacks Of Totalitarianism

Rosemary Lehmberg, the district attorney of Travis County, Texas was arrested for drunk driving April 12, 2013.

Video of her arrest showed her being abusive and threatening officers with retaliation.

She pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 45 days in jail and a $4,000 fine.

She refused to resign, though.

Travis County is one of the few Democrat counties in Texas and contains the state capital of Austin. One of the jobs of the Travis D.A. is to head the The Public Integrity Unit (PIU) which is funded by the state and investigates public corruption, insurance fraud, and motor fuels tax fraud.

The Travis County DA also holds the chief responsibility for enforcing the government and election code statewide.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry felt that a person who scoffs at the law and abuses law enforcement officers was not fit to hold the position. He said he would veto the $7.5 million state funding for the PIU unless Ms. Lehmberg resigned.

Ms. Lehmberg again refused and Perry vetoed the allocation.

What happened next was that a grand jury was empaneled in Travis County and indicted Perry on the felony charges of felony charges of abuse of official capacity and coercion of public servant with a maximum sentence of 109 years in prison.

Perry, today, Aug. 16, issued a statement saying that he “wholeheartedly and unequivocally” stands behind his veto calling the indictment as “nothing more than an abuse of power.

” I cannot, and will not, allow that to happen,” he said.  “I intend to fight against those who would erode our state’s constitution and laws purely for political purposes, and I intend to win. I will explore every legal avenue to expedite this matter and bring it to a swift conclusion. I am confident we will ultimately prevail, that this farce of a prosecution will be revealed for what it is, and that those responsible will be held to account.”

Thank you, Gov. Perry. We wish you were a Pennsylvanian.

Here is the video of District Attorney Lehmberg showing her respect for the law.

Al Gore Sues Al Jazeera

It’s the battle of the Al’s and while fun to watch it’s hard to care about which scorpion wins.

Al Gore, with Current TV co-founder Joel Hyatt, filed suit against Al Jazeera America in Delaware Court of Chancery  over $65 million being held in escrow.

Gore and Hyatt sold the unwatched network to the Jihadist propaganda machine in January 2013 for $500 million making him even more obscenely richer than he was.

As  Current-TV had a viewership closer to a public access network airing a replay of a township commissioners meeting than, well, Fox, the Arabs were not interested in its content but in the favorable cable and satellite deals the network had.

Once a former vice president was no longer on the scene, however, Al Jazeera discovered the sweet circumstances to be rather ephemeral. It found itself in litigation with DirectTV and AT&T, along with being dropped by Time Warner Cable albeit it has since returned.

So they’ve be slow to give Gore and Hyatt all the money, which Gore and Hyatt want as the obscenely rich can never have too much.

Al Jazeera has not been doing much better than Current in its ratings, by the way.

Gore’s attorney in the lawsuit is again David Boies who represented him in the 2000 battle over the Florida election recount.

Ebola Coverage Stays Quiet

With all the stories regarding celebrity deaths and such, it sure is easy to see why its hard for the old media to find some room concerning the West African Ebola epidemic.

Today’s Philadelphia Inquirer did manage to sneak in a few paragraphs on page 4 about how its going to last six more months.

As of yesterday, Aug. 15, the reported toll was 1,145 deaths and  2,127 cases of the disease.

The World Health Organization (WHO) claims the reported toll “vastly underestimate the magnitude of the outbreak.”

The New York Times, to its credit, is taking the matter seriously, as is Matt Drudge.

Other stories of interest not getting much mention is a report that Ukraine has attacked Russian troops — something denied by Russia —  and leaves changing color in Pittsburgh due to record cold temperatures pretty much putting paid to all claims of global warming.
