The Netherlands sounds like a place in Lord of the Rings where bad things dwell. How did it get it’s name? In Dutch the word literally means “low countries” and that’s because half the land their is about 3 feet above sea level with 17 percent actually below sea level.
Regarding Holland, that’s just a region of The Netherlands, technically not the whole country. Holland derives from the Old Dutch word holtlant which means woodland.
