96 percent of shoes have fecal matter on the bottom. At least according to a study commissioned by noted-shoe maker Rockport Co.
That doesn’t sound so surprising. It’s probably why cultures like Japan’s have the custom of taking off the shoes you wore outside, before entering your living quarters. Here in the West, we also had a custom of wearing slippers in the house, distinct from the shoes you wore outside. “Pantoffeln”, the Germans call ’em.
It puts the Arab taboo about showing the soles of your feet to someone in a new light, too. For example, leaning back and putting your feet up on a desk or table and showing your soles, to someone sitting across from you, is considered an insult. There’s probably a lot of intuition there, that you’ve got a lot of dreck on your feet, and you’re flashing it at someone.
