The New York Stock Exchange — and all other stock exchanges for that matter — have their roots in Bruges, Belgium at the inn Huis ter Beurze.

In Medieval times  the staff there became known for offering financial advice to visiting merchants. The inn eventually became a place were trades were made. Beurze is the source for bourse, which is another name for stock exchange.
