Archbishop Chaput Planned Parenthood

Archbishop Chaput Planned Parenthood
Archbishop Charles Chaput

Archbishop Charles Chaput’s hard-hitting column concerning the monstrosities occurring at Planned Parenthood — which have been given a wink and a nod by our “elites” —  deserves greater play.

The column makes a searing rebuttal to Chicago Archbishop Blase Cupich who, on Aug. 3, condemned Planned Parenthood but basically said what they were doing was no different than being against open borders and gun control.

Archbishop Chaput’s column, written Aug. 10, can be found at this link or read below.

Here’s a simple exercise in basic reasoning. On a spectrum of bad things to do, theft is bad, assault is worse and murder is worst. There’s a similar texture of ill will connecting all three crimes, but only a very confused conscience would equate thieving and homicide. Both are serious matters. But there is no equivalence. The deliberate killing of innocent life is a uniquely wicked act. No amount of contextualizing or deflecting our attention to other issues can obscure that.

This is precisely why Cardinal John O’Connor, Bishop James McHugh and others pressed so hard for the passage of the U.S. bishops’ 1998 pastoral letter, Living the Gospel of Life. As Cardinal Joseph Bernardin once wisely noted, Catholic social teaching is a seamless garment of respect for human life, from conception to natural death. It makes no sense to champion the cause of unborn children if we ignore their basic needs once they’re born. Thus it’s no surprise that – year in and year out – nearly all Catholic dioceses in the United States, including Philadelphia, devote far more time, personnel and material resources to providing social services to the poor and education to young people than to opposing abortion.

But of course, children need to survive the womb before they can have needs like food, shelter, immigration counseling and good health care. Humanity’s priority right – the one that undergirds all other rights – is the right to life. As the American bishops wrote in 1998:

“Opposition to abortion and euthanasia does not excuse indifference to those who suffer from poverty, violence and injustice. Any politics of human life must work to resist the violence of war and the scandal of capital punishment. Any politics of human dignity must seriously address issues of racism, poverty, hunger, employment, education, housing, and health care . . . But being ‘right’ in such matters can never excuse a wrong choice regarding direct attacks on innocent human life. Indeed, the failure to protect and defend life in its most vulnerable stages renders suspect any claims to the ‘rightness’ of positions in other matters affecting the poorest and least powerful of the human community. If we understand the human person as the ‘temple of the Holy Spirit’ — the living house of God — then these latter issues fall logically into place as the crossbeams and walls of that house. All direct attacks on innocent human life, such as abortion and euthanasia, strike at the house’s foundation. These directly and immediately violate the human person’s most fundamental right — the right to life. Neglect of these issues is the equivalent of building our house on sand. Such attacks cannot help but lull the social conscience in ways ultimately destructive of other human rights” (22).

A case is sometimes made that abortion is mainly a cultural and moral issue, and politics is a poor solution to the problem. The curious thing is that some of the same voices that argue against political action on the abortion issue seem quite comfortable urging vigorous political engagement on issues like health care, homelessness and the environment. In practice, politics is the application of moral conviction to public discourse and the process of lawmaking. Law not only constrains and defends; it also teaches and forms. Law not only reflects culture; it shapes and reshapes it. That’s why Christians can’t avoid political engagement. Politics is never the main content of Christian faith. It can never provide perfect solutions. But no Christian can avoid the duty to work for more justice and charity in our life as a nation, a task that inescapably involves politics. Thus the recent Senate vote to defund Planned Parenthood was not only right and timely, but necessary. And the failure of that measure involves a public failure of character by every Catholic senator who voted against it.

Memory is important: Two years ago Kermit Gosnell was stripped of his medical license and convicted of murdering three infants born alive from abortion procedures. He operated a Philadelphia abortion center that more closely resembled a butcher shop than a medical clinic. His clinic environment was uglier than the pleasant restaurants and offices captured on recent Center for Medical Progress (CMP) undercover videos. Those videos show a face of Planned Parenthood – senior staffers chatting blithely about the dismemberment and sale of fetal body parts – that can only be called repugnant. But it’s not surprising: If aborted children are simply lumps of potentially useful (and profitable) tissue, what’s the problem?

Again, memory is important: Thirty years ago “pro-choice” groups tried a strategy of using the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act to shut down certain forms of prolife witness. The strategy ultimately failed but – maybe it’s God’s sense of irony — the word “racket” very quickly comes to mind in watching Planned Parenthood staff on the CMP videos.

I’ll close with a word of thanks to Ruben Navarette, Jr. Navarette is a veteran “pro-choice” voice, but his August 10 column at the Daily Beast is worth reading and sharing for its honest revulsion at the whole, ugly, system-wide barbarism of Planned Parenthood’s fetal trafficking. And his column’s best lines come in quoting his prolife wife:

“Those are babies that are being killed. Millions of them. And you need to use your voice to protect them. That’s what a man does. He protects children – his own children, and other children. That’s what it means to be a man.”

Amen.

Life Starts Somewhere

Life Starts SomewhereOn the Aug. 3  “The O’Reilly Factor” commentator Charles Krauthammer weighed in on the question about the public money Planned Parenthood gets and why some people are OK with abortion.

“There is a difference between a fetus and a born adult or child human being,” Krauthammer said, “I think there is an honest division of opinion in the country between people who believe . . . that life and personhood begins at conception and others who believe it’s a gradual process”

Here is a reality that can’t be denied. Life starts somewhere. It is obviously not a gradual process. Can you kill an adolescent? Adolescents are not fully developed.

Further, the claim that life  starts at conception is not religion-based  but reason-based . Religion tells you, you may not kill i.e. murder which is what one does when one purposely take the life of a helpless, innocent human being. Reason tells you that life starts somewhere.

So where does Krauthammer think it starts? That life starts at conception is something for which one can make a rational case. One can’t do that for the claim that it starts when the head leaves the birth canal.

So where does Krauthammer and the Planned Parenthood defenders think it starts? Viability outside the womb? This is contingent upon technology. The standard based on that can significantly change in a generation or two hence viability outside the womb can’t be considered the start of life as the point at which life starts will never change.

So where does Krauthammer think it starts?

Life does not start at point A for believing Catholics and point B for atheists. Where life starts is where life starts for everyone. So Planned Parenthood defenders make your case.

The U.S. Senate, yesterday, Aug. 3, voted 53-46 to defund Planned Parenthood which unfortunately was short of the 60 required for the legislation to pass.

Planned Parenthood is the racist organization founded by a racist that has recently been caught selling the body parts of aborted babies for profit.

Among the senators who think this vile group should continue collected $500 million annually in tax dollars is Pennsylvania’s own “pro life” Little Bobby Casey.

He shames his father.

The only Republican who voted to keep shoveling the bucks at these monsters was Mark Kirk of Illinois.

Abortion Union Connection

Tom C sent a fascinating link regarding the defense the AFL-CIO made regarding the revelation that Planned Parenthood makes mucho money from the sale of body parts from humans whose lives were purposely taken during abortions. Abortion Union Connection

Planned Parenthood provides comprehensive healthcare services to women across the country,”  sadi AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka. “Calls to defund it based on doctored undercover recordings are politically motivated and wrong. We support its core mission of offering safe healthcare services to women in need.”

Planned Parenthood has performed 1.6 million abortions in the last five years and abortion to adoption ratio is 201 to 1. Abortions make up about 94 percent of the group’s pregnancy related services.

Anyway, why is the labor union taking a stand on this rather than, well, illegal immigration?

And how does AFL-CIO Delaware County Council President Paul Mullen feel about defunding the monsters at Planned Parenthood?

Planned Parenthood Loses Coke, Ford, Xerox

Xerox, Ford, and Coca-Cola have asked that Planned Parenthood remove  them from a list of corporate donors the demonic, historically racist organization had been using. Planned Parenthood Loses Coke, Ford, Xerox

The three companies said they have never contributed to the group and do not match employee gifts to it.

The original list of donors  can be found here.  It received publicity after it was revealed Planned Parenthood was harvesting body parts for sale from the humans it was aborting

What is especially disturbing is the contributions from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. As government-sponsored enterprises one would think they would not be making contributions to any group much less one with Planned Parenthood’s history.

Of course, Planned Parenthood gets about a half-billion in tax subsidies anyway.

The money should not just be cut off.  The group should be treated as a criminal organization.

Honesty Highest Political Value

By Father Frank Pavone Honesty Highest Political Value

As I point out in my new book, Abolishing Abortion (due in August from Thomas Nelson/HarperCollins), there is a profound blind spot in the views and policies advocated by many public officials regarding the unborn. Hillary Clinton tops the blindness list. Her attitude toward children in the womb is that they are not welcome to enjoy the basic constitutional protection our nation affords to everyone else’s life.

But then again, Hillary is seeking her party’s nomination for president, and the Democratic Party is affected by the same blind spot so severely that it’s not imaginable that anyone can seriously seek that party’s nomination without being blind to the children in the womb.

Now some will say that, even in political debate, we need to be nice. Particularly in church circles, as we go into the 2016 political cycle, the pleas for ‘civility’ will probably be louder than the pleas for the children in the womb.

But the fact is that civility is not the highest virtue in political discourse. Honesty is. This doesn’t imply that we need to be mean or coarse. But it does imply that when there’s a holocaust going on around us, and an entire political party not only denies it but fosters it, we can’t sit back and pretend that the main thing that matters is that we be nice and non-partisan. Someone has to start sounding the alarm, and it might as well be us.

Interestingly, Cecile Richards, who heads up the largest abortion business in the world (Planned Parenthood), recently made a public call for the need to talk about abortion. Yet the pro-life movement has been making the same call and engaging in the very same effort for decades. What makes the abortion supporters all of a sudden feel the need to talk about abortion? They have never done so before, and they still don’t. All their talks in favor of “abortion rights” speak not about abortion but about choice, freedom, women’s health, constitutional rights, etc. But not once, neither in Cecile Richards’ comments nor in speeches by President Obama or any other abortion supporters will you ever find a description of the abortion procedure.

And when Sen. Rand Paul recently called on Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the head of the Democratic Party, to answer a question as to whether she thinks it’s okay to abort a baby at 7 pounds in the womb, she failed to directly answer the question. Again, they do not want to talk about abortion; they only want to pretend to be talking about abortion.

The blind spot continues. It is up to us to call for honesty as the highest virtue in political discourse. With legislative proposals now underway to protect children from 20 weeks forward and to protect them from dismemberment abortion, it is a fair and urgent question to ask any public official or any abortion supporter in any profession why dismembering children in the womb should continue to be permitted in our nation.

Pro Lifers Winning Cultural War

By Tony Perkins Pro Lifers Winning Cultural War

Liberals have done everything they can to make abortion more appealing. They’ve added spa robes and hot tea. They made it available on Skype, by carry-out, through pills. They’ve recruited celebrities to gush that its providers are “really, truly, no-kidding awesome.” As the Washington Post said, “…Activists are seeking to normalize abortion, to put a human face — and even a positive spin — on the procedure.”

Unfortunately for them, there already is a human face on the procedure: the baby’s. And no amount of Planned Parenthood gift certificates or Black Friday abortion deals can lessen the real cost in people’s minds. After years of changing opinion, monsters like Kermit Gosnell only cemented what most Americans already knew — there’s nothing compassionate about “choice.”

Now, decades after Roe v. Wade, fewer women are exercising the “right” the Supreme Court found in the shadows of the Constitution. In fact, abortion isn’t just in decline — but in a freefall, dropping 12 percent nationwide since 2010. A new AP report makes matters even more interesting, explaining that the dip isn’t just in states with new pro-life laws — but almost all states. (Of the states that reported, only Michigan and Louisiana’s abortions ticked up.) In places like Indiana, Missouri, Ohio, and Oklahoma, where legislators raced to protect women and make clinics more accountable, abortion plunged by at least 15 percent — a remarkable shift in just five years. Even liberal bastions like New York, Washington, and Oregon experienced similar slides, leading the Left to credit things like contraception and radical sex ed.

But researcher Michael New doesn’t buy it. An expert on the causal relationship between pro-life laws and abortion, New says the media is missing the big story here. “A better explanation is the fact that a considerably smaller percentage of women with unintended pregnancies are having abortions [down from 54% in 1995 to 40% in 2008]… The Associated Press article does not even consider this as a possibility.”

In fact, he says, “long-term abortion trends receive relatively little coverage from the mainstream media.” Why? Because they’re a dramatic picture of the pro-life swing taking place in America. “Few Americans know that the number of abortions performed in the United States peaked in 1990 and has declined by approximately 34% since that time. Through offering alternatives to women facing unplanned pregnancies, enacting legislation, and shifting public opinion, pro-life efforts have succeeded.”

Even the most aggressive pro-abortion administration in history can’t compete with the technology, truth, and tenacity of the pro-life movement. For thousands of women, the window into the womb from sonograms and ultrasounds is the only persuasion they need to keep their babies. Combine that with the thriving network of pregnancy care centers and motivated lawmakers, and abortion activists are at a severe disadvantage.

In three years — 2011, 2012, and 2013 — states enacted more pro-life laws (205) than in the entire previous decade combined (which, even the Left admits, has “a real impact on women seeking abortion care”). And you don’t need a Gallup poll to show you what the March for Life recently did — Americans, especially young ones, are increasingly pro-life. So while the Left may argue the means, there’s no disputing the ends: abortion is losing its grip on America.

Gov. Tom Wolf’s nominee for Secretary of the Commonwealth will face the Pennsylvania Senate’s State Government Committee at 11:30 this morning, May 12 and Pedro Cortes has serious baggage. Pedro Cortes Ignored Gosnell

Among the agencies for which the post is responsible is the Bureau of Professional and Occupational Affairs which certifies doctors and makes sure they maintain standards.

Cortes had been Commonwealth Secretary under Gov. Ed Rendell from 2003-2010. He pointedly looked the other way while Kermit Gosnell committed his atrocities despite being fully empowered to step in and stop them. He does not deserve a second chance.

The Delaware County Patriots note that the 9th District’s Dominic F. Pileggi, who represents much of Delco, is the committee’s vice chairman and is expected to be a swing vote. They ask that he be contacted and encourage to deny Cortes a second chance.
