July 4 Pierogie Sale At HMB — Based on extremely strong demand and community requests, Holy Myrrh-Bearers’ Pierogie-makers, are holding a “Special 4th of July Pierogie Sale”.  The delicious potato/cheese filled pierogies are $9 per dozen.  Please place order by Sunday, June 23.

Job Recruiter Role Explained At Workshop

Human Resource Executives and Career Coaches of Joseph’s People Central Delaware County Chapter will teach job seekers how to maximize the effectiveness of interaction with recruiters 7-8:30 p.m., June 18, in the Parish Hall of St. Laurence Church, 8245 West Chester Pike, Upper Darby. The entrance is from the rear church driveway off of St. Laurence Road. All are welcome to the free event, regardless of religious affiliation.

Recruiters can help enhance the effectiveness of gaining employment. Attendees of this workshop will gain understanding of the recruiter’s role in the job search, how to select a recruiter who can best service particular needs, what a recruiter needs and how to interact with a recruiter to maximize the effectiveness of interaction.

Bring a copy of your resume and job description that interests you. If you are just launching a job search, bring the resume you used in the past.

Foundation for Applied Conservative Leadership will hold a PA Political Leadership School, 9 a.m., June 8, at Victory Church, 2560 Audubon Road, Audubon, Pa 19403.

The Foundation describes this a intense one-day training that covers:

  • The Real Nature of Politics – why just “educating” people alone won’t result in change;
  • The Biggest Lie in Politics – and how the political class uses your convictions against you;

Dr. Patricia Divine-Jackson, a Liberian immigrant, who has practiced medicine in Africa, England and the United States, will from 9:15 to 9:45 a.m. describe her Parent Child Learning Project which she started in Philadelphia. The project allows low-income parents to equip their children to learn.

Joseph’s People Central Delaware County (JPCD) welcomes Shelly O’Donovan who will talk about “Presenting Yourself” and Cheryl Ju, who will be available to photograph professional head shots for social media profiles. Since up to 93 percent of information is communicated non-verbally,  imagine the effort spent on words delivered without being aware of what messages our body reveals. Ms. O’Donovan, who teaches Persuasive Speaking at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, will provide insights on how body language can provide increased levels of confidence in your next interview and optimize first impressions to build rapport with hiring managers. She is passionate about helping everyone discover their inner superpower through understanding the fascinating science of body language and interpersonal skills.

Shelly ODonovan, CEO of the Authentic Influence Group, has focused her career on cultivating authentic influence and decoding what makes people tick. She has led vaccine advocacy for GSK, worked as a healthcare lobbyist, and served as a staffer in state government. She has an MPA from the University of Pennsylvania, a Marketing certification from Wharton School (of UPENN) and a BA in political science. She has a certification in body language training and the big 5 personality from a  behavioral research lab.

Cheryl Ju is the founder of Deju Designs LLC. With a Bachelor of Arts degree in Graphic Design, Ms. Ju has a business in design andphotography. She photographs special events for families including Christmas cards, Birthdays, professional headshots and more.

Ms. Allen will teach how to identify and present your accomplishments. Your job search strategy, resume preparation, interview presentation or a request for a raise all depend on your ability to define and tell the story of your accomplishments. Can you quickly and clearly deliver a few sentences that define the problem, action you took and result you achieved for several work accomplishments? Being able to link your skills and strengths to your specific success stories is critical to launching and conducting a productive job search. 

Bring your copy of The Journey; if you are new to Joseph’s People, you will receive a workbook at the meeting.

Christine Allen, M.S., has been serving as Coordinator of Career Services at Penn State Brandywine since 2006. Prior to that, she worked at Delaware County Community College as an Academic Advisor and a Career Counselor/Intern serving a diverse population of students in the college as well as adults in the community through CareerLink. Christine obtained her M.S. in Counseling from Neumann University and is certified as both a Myers Briggs Type Indicator Practitioner and a Global Career Development Facilitator. She presently serves on the Board of Joseph’s People. Christine thoroughly enjoys her work with people of all ages, from teens through seniors, as they seek to find their place in the world of work.
