GAB Back Online, Free Speech Wins

GAB Back Online, Free Speech Wins — GAB has returned.

The free speech social networking alternative to Twitter was kicked off the web by hosting provider Joyent on Oct. 29 after it was revealed that Pittsburgh synagogue massacre suspect Robert Bowers was a poster on the site.

An example of Bowers’ postings is to the right.

The Oct. 27 massacre left 11 dead and seven wounded, including four police officers.

Anyway, outrage occurred and GAB got blamed for inspiring the evil.

Cynics might say it was just an attempt by Silicon Valley powerbrokers to maintain an hegemony on the flow of information and squelch a potential competitor while it was still in the cradle.  It is not as though Twitter never served as a conduit of hate, after all.

Or Facebook, for that matter.

Anyway GAB is back. It’s easy to block the H8ers –or confront them if that is your wish.

We encourage all to join it. GAB Back Online, Free Speech Wins

To the right is  the statement GAB ran last week while it social networking part was offline.  Click to enlarge.

Prodigy And Sears’ Ironic Bankruptcy

Prodigy And Sears Ironic Bankruptcy
It’s the Willis Tower now.

Prodigy And Sears’ Ironic Bankruptcy — Sears, once the world’s largest retailer with the world’s tallest building, filed for bankruptcy today, Oct. 15, and is about to disappear.

Some are crediting Amazon and it’s use of mail order and the internet. The irony is that Sears became the Goliath of its day through mail order and catalogs, and that Sears through it’s involvement with the the online service Prodigy was an pioneer in the internet and e-commerce.

LifeLog William Lawrence Sr Omnibit 8-17-18

The Pentagon had an ambitious plan to build a database tracking a person’s entire existence. It was called LifeLog. The idea was to gather in a single place just about everything an individual says, sees or does; the phone calls he made, the emails he sent, the movies he watched and the music he liked. Civil libertarians found out about it, however, and raised a fuss.

So on Feb. 4, 2004, it was announced that the intrusive project was being cancelled.

Entirely coincidentally we are sure, that was the date Facebook was launched.

Write In C Let It Be Internet History

Write In C Let It Be Internet History — This is the sort of thing that you’d see on Usenet groups or get in your email when the internet was brand new.

For your convenience we will publish below but to get the full effect visit the Tripod built web page which if you notice hasn’t been updated since 1997.

When I find my code in tons of trouble,
Friends and colleagues come to me,
Speaking words of wisdom:
“Write in C.”

As the deadline fast approaches,
And bugs are all that I can see,
Somewhere, someone whispers:
“Write in C.”

Write in C, Write in C,
Write in C, oh, Write in C.
LOGO’s dead and buried,
Write in C.

I used to write a lot of FORTRAN,
For science it worked flawlessly.
Try using it for graphics!
Write in C.

If you’ve just spent nearly 30 hours,
Debugging some assembly,
Soon you will be glad to
Write in C.

Write in C, Write in C,
Write in C, yeah, Write in C.
BASIC’s not the answer.
Write in C.

Write in C, Write in C
Write in C, oh, Write in C.
Pascal won’t quite cut it.
Write in C.

Silicon Valley Hypocrisy Revealed By Gab, Project Veritas

This came via email from Gab and reveals Silicon Valley hypocrisy and Twitter untrustworthyness . Gab, is a social media site dedicated to free speech and is far superior to Twitter.

Since August 2016 Gab has been leading the way with exposing the double standards, hypocrisy, and mass censorship of Big Social Media companies in Silicon Valley. We’ve told you about shadow-banning, hypocritical one-sided rule enforcement, unfair treatment of conservatives and Trump supporters, and one-sided political agendas being pushed by these multi-billion dollar communication platforms that are used by hundreds of millions of people.

Over the last several months we’ve been working closely with Project Veritas to help them infiltrate these big technology companies and expose the mass censorship and corruption happening each and everyday. Thanks to James O’Keefe and his team there is now undeniable proof of Twitter employees admitting that censorship, double standards, and hypocrisy are indeed happening on these platforms.

Olinda Hassan is a Policy Manager for Twitter’s Trust and Safety Team. Her team is responsible for the enforcement of Twitter’s rules and regulation, deciding who and what is allowed to be on the platform. Project Veritas caught her on camera saying this:

PV Journalist: “But how do you keep, like, my timeline… how do you keep certain things off my timeline? People will like retweet people.

Olinda: “We’re trying to down rank it, but you also need to have control of your timeline.”

PV Journalist: I’ve tried to, like block people like Cernovich and stuff like that and mute and stuff like that, but they still show up, like all the time.

Olinda: Yeah. That’s something we’re working on. It’s something we’re working on. We’re trying to get the shitty people to not show up. It’s a product thing we’re working on.”

Some of the other admissions captured by Project Veritas are staggering, and confirm everything that Gab has been saying since August 2016: Silicon Valley is censoring Trump supporters, conservatives, and anyone else they disagree with politically. Here’s a quote from a former member of Twitter’s Content Review Team:

PV Journalist: …a user end services person would deem it: “Pro-Trump,” and take it down?

Mo Norai: Yeah, if they said this is: “Pro-Trump” I don’t want it because it offends me, this, that. And I say I banned this whole thing, and it goes over here and they are like, Oh you know what? I don’t like it too. You know what? Mo’s right, let’s go, let’s carry on, what’s next?

PV Journalist: So, I flag something it’s going to go by you….

Mo Norai: Correct, and they you know you’re looking at it and you’re like: “Oh hey, this is Pro-Trump ….I don’t like it.

The full video is a must watch and you can check it out on Project Vertias’ website here.

The good news is that we are fighting back. We are building an alternative platform for The People, funded by The People. In just a few weeks we’ve reserved over $1.4 million dollars for Gab’s next funding round. Not from Silicon Valley Venture Capitalists or special interests, but directly from our users.

You can join us on our journey to build an alternative platform that supports individual liberty, freedom of speech, and the free flow of information on the internet. Click here to reserve your investment in Gab and help us take on the hypocritical tech oligarchs in Silicon Valley.

Thanks and remember to speak freely!

Using GAB, Where Twitter Refugees Go

Using GAB, Where Twitter Refugees GoUsing GAB, Where Twitter Refugees Go — Twitter permanently banned accounts, Dec. 18, of those it deemed to be practicing hate speech. Nobody likes bigots but Twitter’s action looked suspiciously like a purge of those dissenting from the politics and aesthetics of those of the Twitter bosses.

While our account as of this writing is in good standing we have been spending our time on GAB, a website dedicated to open discourse and free speech.

Powerful forces are calling GAB a hate site because of this principle.

Oh yes, there is hate on that site. We have found full-blown Nazis, and misogynists. We have found Christian-hating atheists and other assorted bigots.

On the other hand, we have also found out-spoken Zionists and Muslims. We have found fans of  notorious homosexual Milo Yiannopoulos’ Dangerous.com; along with just generally nice people posting Bible verses and wishing all a Merry Christmas.

The only prohibitions on GAB concern posting private information, threats including terrorism, and illegal pornography.

Free-speech sites don’t have a great track record. They invariably  seem to fall to trolling and devolve to petty bickering. GAB has wrinkles, though, that give us hope for its success. It is very easy to “mute” posters — i.e. personally ban them — along with words one might find offensive.  It is ad free and hopes to make a profit by charging those wishing options like identity verification or access to the looming service of GABTV, a $5.99 monthly subscription.

We wish it well and encourage all to check it out. It can be found here.

Lamar Smith Swirls To Retirement — Sometimes it seems as though the swamp isn’t draining but it is.  Congressman Lamar Smith (R-Tx21), chairman of the House Science, Space and Technology Committee, has announced that he won’t be seeking re-election after 16 terms in office.

For some of Smith’s (not-so) great accomplishments that we have recorded on these pages click here and here.

Goodby and good riddance, Lamar.

Remove Google From One’s Life

Remove Google From One's LifeWe received this missive about how to remove Google from one’s life from Dax the Duck of Paoli-based DuckDuckGo.

We are going to share it with you.

Remove Google from your life? Yes, it can be done!

Google trackers have been found on 75% of the top million websites. This means they are not only tracking what you search for, they’re also tracking which websites you visit, and using all your data for ads that follow you around the internet. Your personal data can also be subpoenaed by lawyers, including for civil cases like divorce. Google answered over 100,000 such data requests in 2016 alone!

More and more people are also realizing the risk of relying on one company for so many personal services. If you’re joining the ranks of people who’ve decided Google’s data collection has become too invasive, here are some suggestions for replacements with minimal switching cost. Most are free, though even those that are paid are worth it — the cost of not switching is a cost to your personal privacy, and the good news is we have a choice!

Google Search -> DuckDuckGo (free)
Let’s start off with the easiest one! Switching to DuckDuckGo not only keeps your searches private but also gives you extra advantages such as our bang shortcuts, handy Instant Answers, and knowing you’re not trapped in a filter bubble.

Gmail, Calendar & Contacts -> FastMail (paid)
We host @duckduckgo.com addresses on FastMail, an independent, paid service that also includes calendar and contacts support across all devices. There are also several ways to get encrypted email between trusted parties by integrating PGP encryption tools. Even more private email alternatives are ProtonMail and Tutanota, both of which offer end-to-end encryption by default.

YouTube -> Vimeo (free with paid options)
For videos that are only on YouTube (unfortunately, a lot), you can search for and watch them on DuckDuckGo for better privacy protection via YouTube’s “youtube-nocookie” domain. If you’re creating and hosting video yourself, however, Vimeo is the best-known alternative which focuses on creators.

Google Maps -> Apple Maps (free), OpenStreetMap (free)
For iOS users, Apple gives you an alternative built in via Apple Maps, so no installation is necessary. For wider device support, check out OpenStreetMap (OSM) which is more open, though may not have the same ease-of-use or coverage quality as Apple Maps.

Google Drive -> Resilio Sync (free with paid options)
Another service we use internally, Resilio Sync, provides peer-to-peer file synchronization which can be used for private file storage, backup, and file sharing. This also means your files are never stored on a single server in the cloud! The software is available for a wide variety of platforms and devices, including servers.

Android -> iOS (paid)
The most popular alternative to Android is of course iOS, which offers easy device encryption and encrypted messaging via iMessage by default. We also have tips to increase privacy protection on your iPhone or iPad.

Google Chrome -> Safari (free), Firefox (free), Brave (free)
Safari was the first major browser to include DuckDuckGo as a built-in private search option. A more cross-device compatible browser is Mozilla’s Firefox, an open source browser with a built-in tracker blocker in private mode. Brave goes one step further with tracker blocking switched on by default. There are also many more browsers that come with DuckDuckGo as a built-in option.

Blogger -> Ghost (paid), WordPress (free with paid options)
Ghost is both a hosted (paid) and self-installable blogging platform, tracker-free by default and run by a non-profit foundation. We like it so much we use it for our own blog! A free alternative is WordPress, powering an estimated 25% of the world’s websites. It’s also available both for self-installation and as a hosted service with no third-party trackers by default. The community is huge with extensive multilingual documentation and many themes to choose from.

Google Hangouts -> Zoom (free with paid options), appear.in (free with paid option)
Zoom is a robust video chat alternative we use internally that works well even for large numbers of participants, though requires software to be installed. A web-only alternative is appear.in which doesn’t require an account — just go to the website to open a chat room and you’re ready.

Google Allo -> Signal (free)
There are several services offering private messaging but, as we’ve mentioned before, Signal gets our recommendation. It offers free, end-to-end encryption for both messages and private calls. It’s also recommended by Edward Snowden and renowned security expert Bruce Schneier, among others.

As you can see, moving away from Google needn’t be hard. In fact, you might find you prefer the alternatives while also getting better privacy!

Gab Lawsuit Google Standard Oil

Gab Lawsuit Google Standard OilGab Lawsuit Google Standard Oil — Typically ham-handed actions by Silicon Valley progressives has led to a lawsuit in Philadelphia that may shake the world.

Thank God for our enemies one can say.

The suit was filed Thursday (Sept. 14) in the United States District Court of Pennsylvania by Gab.Ai.Inc. Texas-based Gab claims a place of business at 1900 Market St., Philadelphia.

Gab is a social network akin to Twitter. It was removed from Google Play on Aug. 17 with the corporate behemoth citing that convenient catch-all “hate speech by users” as the reason.

Right. Nothing nasty is ever said by users of Alphabet Inc.’s YouTube.

So the “hate speech” accusation gets an LOL. Gab cites a more realistic motive in its suit namely that Gab competes directly with Google at several levels especially regarding its partnership with Twitter.  Hence, Gab is a threat to Google’s near monopoly regarding social news especially on mobile devices.

Gab is accusing Google of violating the Clayton Act and Sherman Act, anti-trust legislation from 1914 and 1890 respectively.

If Gab shows that Google is a trust that should be treated in accordance with these laws, well, consider what happened to Standard Oil.

Gab is easy to sign up for on the desktop and can be found here.
