Pensacola, Fla. was the first settlement in what is now the United States, however it was blown away in a hurricane on Sept. 19, 1559.

By the time a real settlement was established and survived, St. Augustine was all ready established as the first city. Apparently Robert James, hurricanes do not hit that area as often as Pensacola.

For what it’s worth, the original name for the place was Santa María de Ochuse.

Tom Dula was a mustered-out Confederate soldier who was hanged for the 1866 murder of Laura Foster in North Carolina. He had escaped to Tennessee but a man named Grayson turned him in. In the accent of the region Dula comes out as Dooley. Poor boy.

Sorry Columbus, John Cabot discovered North America –for good, we mean — in 1497. He was an Italian working for the English.

So why is it called America? Amerigo Vespucci, an Italian working for Spain, discovered the South American mainland about the same time. The map makers figured it was all one great big place and Amerigo got better press.

Hobey Baker, America’s first great hockey player, came from Bala Cynwyd, Pa.

Hobart Armory Hare “Hobey” Baker starred for Princeton from 1910 through 1916 turning down a offer of $20,000 to play for the Montreal Canadians.  He enlisted in the Army Air Service in 1917 for World War I and shot down three of the enemy. He was killed in a plane crash in France just a little over a month after the war ended.

F. Scott Fitzgerald admired him and based a character in This Side of Paradise on him.
