Unfortunately, it was an American P-51.
Fortunately, the pilot survived, parachuting out.
Unfortunately, the pilot had a date that night and was wearing his dress uniform and carrying a bottle of whiskey.
Fortunately, the managed to get him off the beach and back to England.
Whether he made his date is unknown.
Barrett would go on to raise a family in Havertown, Pa. and become a newsman with the Philadelphia Bulletin.
