Maple Leaf Fans Finish US Anthem After Mic Failure

The Toronto Maple Leafs hosted the Nashville Predators, Nov. 18, when the microphone failed during the singing of the U.S. National Anthem.

The fans knew the words to The Star Spangled Banner and finished it. Remember, they are Canadians.

Homelessness Explodes Under Obama

The Oct. 20 Sports Illustrated reports that in 2012-13 the U.S. Department of Education documented more than 1.2 million homeless students in the nation’s public elementary, middle and high schools.

This represents a 58 percent increase since 2008.

Department of Education defines homelessness as “the lack of a fixed, regular and adequate night-time residence.”

About 900,000 of the students “double up” residing with relatives or friends.

It can be found on page 54 in a story about homeless high school athletes.

Alaska Favorite Football Team Is Rams

Alaska Favorite Football Team Is Rams

Dick’s Sporting Goods ranks each state’s favorite football team by the jerseys it sells. According to this,  as if week 3 in the season, the most popular team in Pennsylvania is The Steelers, who are also most beloved in Arkansas.  Eagle fans can take solace in that their team is the most popular in Delaware.

In New York State, believe it or not, it is the Buffalo Bills. The Giants, though, win in New Jersey. Home field advantage there it seems.

There are strange incongruities. The favorite team in the District of Columbia is not The Redskins but the Atlanta Falcons. The Skins, however, rule in Virginia. And Nebraska.

The Rams are shut out of their home state of Missouri by The Chiefs, who also dominate neighboring Kansas.

However, they can take very cold comfort in that their jerseys sell the best in Alaska.

Classy LeSean McCoy

Philadelphia Eagles running back LeSean McCoy went to PYT, a burger joint on North Hancock Street in Philadelphia  with some friends for lunch on Sept. 8.

The party was reportedly loud and rude and ended up leaving a 20 cent tip on a $61 check.

Rob Knelly, the lucky waiter, took a photo of the receipt and put it online for the world to see.

Classy LeSean McCoy

Was Knelly just a crappy waiter who deserved a bad tip? If it comes down to having to chose between a waiter and an NFL player as to whose word to accept, we think we’ll go with the waiter.

Frankly,  Knelly should just be grateful he didn’t serve the meal in an elevator.

McCoy’s comment on the matter to the Philadelphia Daily News was “It’s bull—-“.

Mentored Youth Fishing Day

The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission is hosting a Mentored Youth Fishing Day on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 1, on 17 Panfish Enhancement Lakes, the closest one to Delaware County being Chambers Lake in Chester County’s Hibernia Park which is on Route 82 north of Coatesville.

To encourage participation, the PFBC has reduced the price of a Labor Day one-day adult resident and Labor Day one-day adult non-resident license to just $1 on Labor Day, says State Rep. Jim Cox (R-129). With issuing agent and transaction fees, the total price for the one-day adult license is $2.70.

To participate in the Mentored Youth Fishing Day, anglers 16 years of age or older (adult anglers) must possess a valid Pennsylvania fishing license and be accompanied by a youth (less than 16 years of age) who has obtained a Mentored Youth Fishing Permit or Voluntary Youth Fishing License from the commission.

For full details on program requirements and the availability of these one-day licenses, visit the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission’s website here.

Taney Dragons Name Traced To Infamous Judge

Taney Dragons Name Traced To Infamous Judge

Taney Dragons Name Traced To Infamous Judge

The Taney Dragons, the melting pot of a baseball team from Philadelphia with a black girl pitcher, won the hearts of all with their just-ended Little League World Series run in which they finished third in the nation.

So where does the name Taney come from? It’s from Taney Street, a four-block stretch of pavement that runs from Pine to Bainbridge just across the Schuylkill River from Penn.

And for whom is Taney Street named? That’s the irony.  It is for the man who wrote the Dred Scott decision, the most racist and viciously destructive Supreme Court decision in our history.

Dred Scott was more hateful and irrational than Roe v Wade. It was more racist than Plessy v Ferguson. It was crueler than Buck vs Bell.

It declared blacks to be less than human. It started the Civil War.

Roger Taney was a Democrat — no surprise, really –from Maryland who was picked by Andrew Jackson to be Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in 1835 after the great John Marshall died in a stage coach accident.

It is said he favored States’ Rights but that certainly wasn’t the case concerning slavery. In 1842, he ruled that Pennsylvania could not stop a Maryland man from seizing former slaves that had taken up residence in the Keystone State.

It was in 1857, he really let the mask drop.  In Dred Scott he wrote regarding blacks:

It is difficult at this day to realize the state of public opinion in regard to that unfortunate race which prevailed in the civilized and enlightened portions of the world at the time of the Declaration of Independence, and when the Constitution of the United States was framed and adopted; but the public history of every European nation displays it in a manner too plain to be mistaken. They had for more than a century before been regarded as beings of an inferior order, and altogether unfit to associate with the white race, either in social or political relations, and so far unfit that they had no rights which the white man was bound to respect

So much for “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal”

Those governing Philadelphia at the time apparently thought the decision was peachy.  They named the street for him the next year.

Three years after that our country’s bloodiest war began. Taney died before it ended on Oct. 12, 1864, still the chief justice and giving as much grief to the Lincoln administration as he could but with his fangs largely pulled.

So thank you Mo’ne Davis and the rest of the Dragons, for the deserved mocking you gave to one of America’s great bigots.

Delaware River Bass Paradise

Mike Iaconelli

Mike Iaconelli celebrating in the Delaware River Bass Paradise

Kudos to Mike Iaconelli of Pittsgrove, N.J. for winning this year’s four-day Bassmaster Elite Series fishing competition for the Delaware River.

Iaconelli took 47 pounds and 14 ounces of the fish from the river and tributaries in the event that ended Sunday, Aug. 10.

Iaconelli gets $100,000 and an instant qualification for the 2015 world championship, the Bassmaster Classic.

His prime spot was the mouth of Timber Creek in New Jersey. All his catch was largemouth bass.

He caught 80 percent of his fish on two lures: a half-founce, small-profile brown-purple finesse jig that he’s helping design for Missile Jigs; and 3/8 ounce Berkley Havoc Pit Boss  that was green pumpkin and blue metalflake.
