Ethanol Mandates Must End Say Workers

Ethanol Mandates Must End Say Workers
Senator wants sane regulation.

Ethanol Mandates Must End Say Workers — Sen Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) and Congressman Pat Meehan (R-Pa7)  met with employees at Monroe Energy’s Trainer refinery in Delaware County to hear their that ethanol mandates must end.

The government’s Renewable Fuel Standard mandate requires fuel suppliers like those in Trainer and Philadelphia to blend millions of gallons of biofuels – notably corn ethanol – into the nation’s gasoline supplies.

“This corporate welfare for the ethanol industry harms the viability of good paying jobs, drives up gas prices, increases food costs, and harms the environment,” Toomey said.

Toomey is a co-sponsor of the Renewable Fuel Standard Repeal Act (S. 1195) that would end such mandates.

Toomey Motion To Force Budget To Comply With Law Fails

Toomey Motion To Force Budget To Comply With Law Fails — Sen. Pat Toomey recently took to the  Senate floor to present a “motion to recommit” the bill funding the Transportation and Housing and Urban Development departments because they called for spending 10 percent more than last year and failed to comply with bipartisan budget caps as required by law. The spending  was even higher than the President requested. The motion failed.

Thank you Harry Reid and the rest of the money-grubbing Democrats.

Toomey notes that Federal  spending has doubled since 2000. Kids, get ready for a crummy future.

Traditional Cigar Manufacturing Act

Traditional Cigar Manufacturing Act — Sen Pat Toomey is co-sponsoring the bipartisan Traditional Cigar Manufacturing and Small Business Jobs Preservation Act of 2013 that would properly distinguish premium, hand rolled cigars from other tobacco products, such as cigarettes, for the purpose of regulation by the FDA.

Pennsylvania is the home of many old, small, premium-cigar retailers and employes several thousand people. Recent federal Food and Drug Administration (FD) regulations have endangered their existence.

“The enactment of FDA regulations on premium cigars would only serve to inhibit future success and job growth in this industry,” Toomey said.

Among those joining in praise for Toomey was Robert Levine, president of Holt’s Cigar Co., which has been in business in Philadelphia for more than 100 years.

“My children are now in the business and they should have the opportunity to take our business to the next level without overbearing government regulations,” Levin said.

Medical Pricing Transparency Sought

Medical Pricing Transparency Sought — Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa) reports that he has  asked the government watchdog agency known as the Government Accountably Office (GAO) to examine consumers’ access to accurate medical pricing information.

“It is imperative that consumers have reliable information on health care costs and quality. Clearer, readily available information empowers Medicare beneficiaries and patients to shop for value and obtain high-quality care,” Toomey says.

Toomey Pushes Regulators On NEPA Gas Production

Toomey Pushes Regulators On NEPA Gas Production — Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa) has requested that the Delaware River Basin Commission (DRBC)  finalize natural gas development standards

“The DRBC, a federal-interstate compact created in 1961 to regulate water usage along the Delaware River in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, and Delaware, has failed to establish regulations to allow for water to be used for natural gas development,” Toomey said. “This procrastination has become a de facto moratorium on natural gas production and related economic activities in northeastern Pennsylvania at a time when unemployment in the area is still well above the national average.

He notes that the moratorium is “particularly confusing” because a similar federal-interstate compact with the Susquehanna River Basin Commission issued regulations allowing for natural gas production in 2008.

Obama War On Coal Costing Pa.

Obama War On Coal Costing Pa. — Sen. Pat Toomey notes that  FirstEnergy is deactivating coal-fired power plants in Fayette and Washington counties and leaving hundreds out of work due to Obama’s energy policies.

“These unemployed Pennsylvanians are unfortunate casualties in President Obama’s ‘war on coal,’ which I will continue to fight against in the Senate,” Toomey said.  “Coal is a domestically sourced, low-cost form of energy which helps sustain jobs for Pennsylvania and beyond.”

Toomey Praises New Fed Judges

Toomey Praises New Fed Judges — The Senate, last week,  Nitza Quiñones Alejandro and Jeffrey Schmehl as U.S. District Judges for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, reports Sen. Pat Toomey.

President Obama nominated these two judges last November upon a joint recommendation from Toomey and Sen. Bob Casey.

“Since joining the Senate, I’ve worked closely with Sen. Casey to fill Pennsylvania’s judicial vacancies with qualified, experienced judges who have unquestioned honesty, ability and integrity,” Toomey said. “I believe both of these individuals meet this high standard.”

Toomey said that in her 21 years on the bench, Nitza Quiñones Alejandro has presided over many cases incorporating different facets of the law. In addition to her extensive experience in the courtroom, she has also remained active in her community through her work with schools and mentoring summer law interns.

“She is eminently qualified and a committed public servant. Moreover, I am proud that Judge Quiñones will be the first Latina judge to serve in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania,” Toomey said.

Toomey said that Jeffrey Schmehl’s colleagues appointed him president judge of the Berks County Court of Common Pleas in 2008, a sign of his fitness for the bench. He has also helped veterans in need of legal assistance by working to establish a veterans court in Berks County.  He has a passion for the law and will be a dedicated jurist.

Will Obama Push Putin On Adoption Restrictions?

Will Obama Push Putin On Adoption Restrictions? — Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) has  joined a bipartisan group of senators and congressmen to ask President Obama to raise the issue of Russia’s ban on U.S. adoptions with President Vladimir Putin at  G8 Summit, which will take place June 17-18 at a luxury golf resort in Lough Erne, Northern Ireland, which is about 80 miles west of Belfast.

“I am urging a humanitarian solution for those Russian orphans who have already met and bonded with their American families, yet were not able to have their adoptions completed due to the ban,” he said. “They have become known as “pipeline” families.”

Toomey noted that Americans have been able to adopt Russian orphans for  20 years, during which time over 60,000 Russian children were welcomed to the United States.

“An overwhelming majority has found loving, nurturing homes, including many in Pennsylvania,” Toomey said. “President Putin’s ban eliminates the possibility of a new life with a caring American family. It is shocking that the Russian government would punish the most vulnerable members within its society – orphan children. I hope President Obama can convince President Putin that the welfare of children should not be used as a bargaining chip for diplomatic retribution.”

Frank and Lisa Barhight of Kingsley,  were among the couples seeking help from Toomey.

“The Russian Ministry of Education referred to us two beautiful Russian orphan boys; ages one and three. The moment we held these children in our arms, a bond was formed and we became a family,” Barhight siad. “We were in Vladivostok, Russia when President Putin signed the ban. As soon as we returned from Russia, we contacted Senator Pat Toomey for assistance. Senator Toomey and his staff have shown tremendous concern and empathy for our family. Now is the time for President Obama to engage with President Putin and find a solution to allow us to finish our adoptions and bring these children home.”
