GOP Committee Taps Democrat Campaigner

The committee members of the 161st District of the Pennsylvania State House, tonight, May 28, overwhelmingly tapped a man who six months earlier had been actively fighting to get a liberal Democrat in the State Senate. GOP Committee Taps Democrat Campaigner -- Mullen is the president of the county's AFL-CIO. He actively campaigned for Democrat John Kane last fall against Republican good guy Tom McGarrigle in the 26th District State Senate Race. In 2010, he supported Democrat Joe Sestak against Republican Pat Toomey.

Four-fifths of those in attendance reportedly voted for Paul Mullen to be the party’s nominee in a special election Aug. 4 to replace Republican Joe Hackett who resigned claiming he wanted to return to law enforcement.

Mullen is the president of the Delaware County AFL-CIO. He actively campaigned for Democrat John Kane last fall against Republican good guy Tom McGarrigle in the 26th District State Senate Race. In 2010, he supported Democrat Joe Sestak against  Republican Pat Toomey. Would he support Sestak again next year if there should be a rematch? That question was apparently not asked. The only question asked of him reportedly involved real estate taxes and his answer was he did not have one.

The nomination is expected to become official next week.

The only other person interviewed by the committee was Lisa Esler, who unlike Mullen, holds a public office namely Penn Delco School Director. In  the May 19 primary election, Mrs. Esler was the top vote-getter on both Republican and Democrat ballots to retain her seat. She has developed a reputation for tackling the cronyism prevalent in state politics.

Could that be the reason four-fifths of the committee members voted against her?

  1. This was a defining moment for the Republican party in Delaware County. Mullen is a Republican only by registration–he supports liberal democratic candidates and liberal democratic stands on issues. Voting for the Democrat will be no different than voting for Mullen. It’s going to be very interesting when Sen. Toomey comes to Delco and Andy Reilly has to explain the party’s choice for office supporting Joe Sestak. It’s amazing that Lisa Esler is a no nonsense Republican, champions what Republicans are supposed to stand for, has the ability to win elections without party support–and the party ignores her. Curious, isn’t it?

  2. The Republican Establishment is killing the Republican party. AFL-CIO President Mullen as a credible Republican contender, really? Shows how much they (don’t) care about their base and that there is no difference between the 2 parties.

  3. And then the Republicans wonder why they lose elections? It’s tough enough fighting the Democrat machine…now we can add the Republican machine to the list. Lisa Esler was the top vote getter in the recent Penn-Delco School Board Primary Election and she did it all on her own – without the Republican Party endorsement. Guess going with a strong winner is not what the Republican Party stands for anymore. Can anyone tell me why we should support Republicans anymore?

  4. Lisa may not be the candidate for the special election but she she run against Mullen in the 2016 Primary. Real republican voters will be out and vote for the only Republican in the race.

Paul Mullen is a democrat who will not represent Delco Republicas. The Delco GOP should be embarrassed – are they really that afraid of organized labor.

  5. Mary Ellen, Donna and Marilyn Heider comments say what has to be said.

Republicans, please write in Real Republican Lisa Esler in November.

  6. I hope that Lisa runs a write-in campaign because every vote she gets will take one vote away from the “Republican”. The Party forgets that Delco is not the stronghold Republican area that it used to be. Elections are close and a lost vote is a very big deal. Choosing a Democrat with an “R” behind his name shows where Party loyalty lies–and it’s not with the people. And they wonder why people aren’t chomping at the bit to work for them at election time.

    1. If the Democrat wins, what difference does it make? Is he or she any more likely to support pension reform than Mullen? Prevailing wage? It’s better to have the wolf outside the tent anyway.

  7. PA has been named as being the 10th most corrupt state in the union. Delaware County accounts for a large portion of that corruption. They have now shown exactly who they are by endorsing the president of the union. Delaware County has just become Philadelphia.

  8. Questions for the Nominating Committee that voted him in:

Where was Paul Mullen during the election of Gov. Rendell
Where was Paul Mullen during the election of Senator Casey
Where was Paul Mullen during the election of Barack Obama
Where was Paul Mullen during the reelection of Barack Obama
Where was Paul Mullen during the election of Tom Wolf
Where was Paul Mullen during the votes on Republican Bills
Where will Paul Mullen be during the next Governors Election
Where will Paul Mullen be during the next Senatorial Election
Where will Paul Mullen be during the next Presidential Election

  9. This is obscene. Why even bother having a Republican Party? We need to get word to Dom Giordano about this. He exposed the RINO candidate in Montco — a Planned Parenthood Board Member, for the love of God — and that clown lost.

When it comes to union roaches, sunlight is the only disinfectant. Dom is our guy.

    1. She would certainly get my write-in vote if I could. We ought to find out who the committee people are who selected paul Mullen and get rid of them,

  10. People that live in that district should call their committee man/woman and ask why they voted to put a democrat in Harrisburg to represent them.

  11. Yet another knife in the heart of our Republic. If Lisa decides to run as a write in, we need to mobilize the grassroots, get to as many voters as possible in that district and let them know what’s going on.
