The Netherlands sounds like a place in Lord of the Rings where bad things dwell. How did it get it’s name? In Dutch the word literally means “low countries” and that’s because half the land their is about 3 feet above sea level with 17 percent actually below sea level.

Regarding Holland, that’s just a region of The Netherlands, technically not the whole country. Holland derives from the Old Dutch word holtlant which means woodland.

  1. “In Dutch the word literally means “low countries” …”

Well, it does in English, too. “Nether” means “low, lower”. Same goes for the country’s name in the other languages of Europe. German, “die Niederlande” (note the German cognate, “nieder” to English “nether”); French, “les Pays-Bas”, Spanish, “los Paises Bajos”, Italian, “Paesi Bassi” (of course, since the Romance languages all derive from Latin, they’ll be similar).

“Nether” comes from the same root as the archaic preposition “neath” in “beneath”, “underneath”.

The Slavic languages just transliterate “Nederlande” directly into their own pronunciation, like the Polish, “Niderlandy”.

Sorry, I studied languages in college, so this is where I get to use my major.
