The Ottoman Empire lasted from 1299 to 1922 during which time it conquered Arabia, North Africa and a large part of Europe, and was a major world power. It is named for Osman Gazi, whose decedents ruled it for its entirety. The dynasty remains and Osman Bayezid Osmanoğlu heads it. Osmanoğlu is an American citizen. and worked in the New York Public Library. He’s 91.
