Woman Describes Her Abortion, Healing

For years after she and her husband made the decision to abort their first child in January 1974, Karen Perez couldn’t think of the person who died that day as a child.

“I could only refer to my first child as an ‘abortion.’ It was too painful to personalize the life I chose to take; to call him a child, or a baby,” she says.

Karen will join Priests for Life Executive Director Janet Morana on Radio Maria’s “Gospel of Life” at 6 tonight,  Nov. 18   to talk about the healing she received after her abortion, and the pro-life activism that runs through her family as a result.

When Karen returned home on the day of her abortion, she turned on the television and saw news footage of the very first March for Life in Washington, D.C.

The date was Jan.  22, the first anniversary of the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion. She knew then that she would never forget the day she said “no” to life.

“My husband and I went to confess to a priest immediately,” she said.

The birth of their three children filled the couple with guilt but they eventually found help through a post-abortion healing program, and since then they have been leaders in pro-life efforts in Houston. Their oldest son is a Catholic priest who also leads healing retreats through Rachel’s Vineyard. And Karen now calls her aborted child by name, Joseph. She has received numerous assurances that she chose the name wisely, and will share those stories with Radio Maria listeners.

Also joining Janet will be Priests for Life Pastoral Team member Kevin Burke, L.S.W., co-founder of Rachel’s Vineyard and head of Silent No More’s Fatherhood Forever initiative. Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, will join Janet for the final segment.

For a list of Radio Maria stations or to tune in to “Gospel of Life” on the Internet, go to http://radiomaria.us/the-gospel-of-life. Tablet and smart phone users also can download a free Radio Maria app so they can listen to the show wherever they go.

The show will be rebroadcast at 2 a.m.  Thursday and midnight  on Sunday.  All the shows are archived at priestsforlife.org/radiomaria/

Ivanpah Solar Plant Not Producing What Was Hoped

The  Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System built on five square miles of environmentally sensitive desert on the California-Nevada border is only producing about half the electricity expected.

The plant, the world’s largest, opened in February and was backed by $1.6 billion in federal loan guarantees.

Pennsylvania Cell Phone Tax

The big three taxes inflicted by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and its subdivisions are sales, property and income.

However, there are a host of sneaky little ones out there and they do add up.

Pennsylvania’s cell phone tax is 14.05 percent which is eighth highest in the nation. Washington State has the highest at 18.6 percent while adjacent Oregon has the lowest at 1.76 percent.

Note, this is on top of the federal 5.82 percent tax on wireless service.

A study  by the Centers for Disease Control found that 41 percent of American households have only cell phone service.

Sabotage Pipeline Plan Says Dem

A Democrat Pennsylvania state senator is telling opponents of energy to take legalities out of context to sabotage the  Sunoco Mariner East 2 Pipeline plan.

The proposed pipeline would transport natural gas liquids from the shale fields of western Pennsylvania to the Marcus Hook refinery complex on the Delaware River.

Andrew E. Dinniman, who represents the 19th District in Chester County, told members of the Chester County Sierra Club to use  Section 27 of the state constitution to encourage local municipalities to harass construction of the line.

Section 27 reads “the people have a right to clean air, pure water, and to the preservation of natural, scenic, historic and esthetic values of the environment.”

Well, yes. And it has been accepted that the state Public Utility Commission is the agency to ensure that the air and water et al are protected else if left  to every zoning hearing board between Marcus Hook and Houston, Pa., the project would be nickle and dimed into non-existence.

Refinery workers whose jobs and standard of living depend on the natural gas must be made to understand that it is their automatically deducted union dues that fund the campaigns of guys like Dinniman.

Chronic Wasting Disease Found In 10th Deer

The discovery of a 10th captive deer to test positive for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) prompted a informational meeting between The Pennsylvania House Game and Fisheries Committee and officials from the state Department of Agriculture and the  Game Commission, reports State Rep. Jim Cox (R-129).

CWD attacks the brain of infected deer, elk and moose, producing small lesions that eventually result in death.

The disease was first discovered on a captive deer farm two years ago. Currently, 31 captive deer farms across the state are quarantined, where deer cannot be moved on or off the properties.

There is no evidence that humans or livestock can get the disease. However, as a precaution, hunters are advised to not eat meat from animals known to be infected with CWD, Cox said. The Pennsylvania Game Commission offers to test game — for a fee — that may be infected with the disease. Information on testing can be found here.

Water Valley Beating Shows School Choice Need

The brutal beating of 13-year-old Destiny Hughes, a seventh grader at Water Valley High School in Mississippi, was caught on camera by fellow students, who it should be noted also stopped the assault as the teachers must have been otherwise preoccupied.

“You know, the school has a policy against bullying and violence, but if they’re not going to enforce it, it’s not worth the paper it’s printed on,” said Destiny’s mother, Rhonda, who pointed out that her daughter had had numerous run ins with the girl prior to the assault captured on camera.

Mrs. Hughes is now suing the school and said she will be homeschooling her children.

Here is the video of the assault that originally ran on on WTVA in Tupelo.

If parents had the power to fire their schools — and teachers — this sort of thing would be far less frequent as those getting the money would have a strong incentive to nip it in the bud.

It should further be noted that school choice is not the end of public education as by definition voucher dollars would be tax dollars. Vouchers would expand education and increase its quality actually.

Further, if one opposes school choice ask yourself this: If parents cannot be trusted to choose their children’s teachers why can they be trusted to vote?

If one is honest one will conclude that since they can be trusted to vote (and choose their children’s doctors and food products and clothing), then then can be trusted to choose their children’s teachers and schools
