Raising Debt Ceiling Failed Solution

After last month’s boardwalk fire in Seaside Heights, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, self-proclaimed fiscal hawk, immediately allocated $15 million in taxpayer money to business owners.

Sorry, Guv, but that’s why God made insurance. Government had absolutely no reason to get involved. Yet it did.

That decision is symbolic of how the United States became so paralyzed by its monstrous debt. A little here, a lot there, often for things that tug at the heart but have no relevance to government, multiplied countless times over decades. The result is municipalities and entire governments, such as Detroit and Puerto Rico, on the verge of collapse.

Now the Piper is calling the granddaddy of them all: The United States government and its incomprehensible $17 trillion debt, and no bailouts or bankruptcies can save that behemoth. Short of a complete reversal of business-as-usual in Washington — cutting debt rather than adding it — things are about to get uglier than ever before.

The airwaves are filled with “experts” admonishing Congress to raise America’s debt ceiling (the amount of debt the U.S. can legally incur) so as to avoid the “catastrophic” consequences of “default” if it doesn’t.

I’m not sure what’s worse: The deliberately disingenuous politicians and media outlets pushing that misinformation, or the ones who, without thinking, actually swallow that pap.

They want you to think this a complicated issue. It’s not. In fact, it’s remarkably straightforward: Aggressively rein in spending with a commonsense approach, or risk an eventual currency collapse that will turn America into a second-world nation in record time. It’s that simple.

So let’s cut through the white noise and look at the facts:

1. Without question, there will be pain if the debt ceiling isn’t raised, but there will be no default. By law, payment on the national debt comes first, and there’s plenty of money to pay our interest obligation ($220 billion) since revenue is more than 10 times that amount ($2.6 trillion). Granted, that’s a ticking time bomb since the principle isn’t being touched, but it’s clear we don’t have to incur more debt to “pay off” existing debt. So let’s not do it.

2. Most everyone concedes the astronomical debt poses a significant problem, yet every time the ceiling is reached, Congress raises it even further — and the shopping spree continues. This of course leads to more deficits and more debt, creating a vicious cycle. (Quick primer: The deficit is the amount we overspend each year; the debt is the total amount we owe). Enough is enough. Keep the ceiling where it is, and force the government to tighten its belt and live within its means, just as solvent businesses and stable families do. Identifying a problem yet looking the other way is impotence. Enabling its growth is cowardice.

3. All the economists, politicians and Wall Streeters who say that not raising the debt ceiling would be the height of irresponsibility need to look in the mirror. How is raising it any saner? Doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting a different result — in this case, thinking that increasing debt will prove beneficial — is lunacy. If they’re the best and brightest, I shudder to think of the dumb ones.

4. Prioritize the budget. Force Congress to finally do its job, making them fight like cats and dogs to fund what is most needed. You’d be amazed at how quickly they figure out what’s important — and what isn’t. Pass a law requiring across-the-board cuts. No exceptions, even the sacred cows of entitlements and defense. While it won’t be pretty, people will be much more accepting if they know everyone feels the pain. Most important, get the ball rolling on a constitutional amendment mandating a balanced budget, as almost all states have that requirement.

5. Magically creating money to pay our bills is insane, but the Fed has been doing just that, inventing $85 billion per month with a keystroke (they don’t even print it anymore. Ain’t technology great?), which then gets pumped into the “economy” via Wall Streeters’ pockets. That’s why, despite the stagnant economy, the stock market remains so robust, artificially propped up by an entitlement program for the super-wealthy. Wall Street has become so addicted to the Fed’s drug that the mere mention of cutting back sends the market tanking, so the funny money keeps rolling. This must end now, on our terms, before the big meltdown occurs, since what goes up must come crashing down.

6. While unfathomable a generation ago, the world now views America as an increasingly bad credit risk. That’s why there has been such a drop-off in the purchasing of Treasuries, and why the Fed itself is buying a trillion dollars’ worth each year.

Many are concerned with the substantial U.S. debt owned by the Chinese, but that’s yesterday’s news. Not only aren’t the Chinese buying Treasuries like they once were, but they (and the Japanese) have been dumping significant U.S. debt while buying gold and silver at a record pace. Think they know something?

The game is up, and everyone knows it — except those in Washington.

A wise man once said there’s what people want to hear, there’s what people want to believe, there’s everything else — and then there’s the truth. And the hard truth is that all of the easy answers are behind us.

To think America can’t fall is arrogance at best, stupidity at worst. It can, and will, unless drastic action is immediately taken, starting with the current debt ceiling being kept intact. Doing so would send an unmistakable message that America is serious about making a comeback. But raising it as a “solution” would be akin to rearranging deck chairs on the Titantic.

Anyone remember how that turned out?

House Stiffens Child Luring Law

The Pennsylvania House recently approved a measure to increase the penalties for luring a young child into a motor vehicle or structure, reports State Rep. Jim Cox (R-129)

House Bill 1594, which he co-sponsored, would make the crime of luring a child a second-degree felony, punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $25,000. Currently, the offense is graded as a first-degree misdemeanor with a fine of $10,000.

House Bill 1594 now heads to the Senate for consideration.

Washington Rednecks, Name Change

Washington Rednecks, Name Change Proposal
A possible symbol for the Washington Rednecks?

Bob Costas, whose lifetime of dedication to describing grown men playing children’s games has made him holier than you and me, has deemed that the name Washington’s NFL franchise has had since 1932 to be offensive and must be changed.

It’s an insult, a slur, no matter how benign the present day intent,” Costas huffed. “It’s fair to say that for a long time now, and certainly in 2013, no offense has been intended. But if you take a step back, isn’t it clear to see how offense might legitimately be taken?

Actually, Bob it was never meant as insult. Not today, and not in 1932. People and institutions don’t take upon themselves labels they feel demean themselves, and it wasn’t Philadelphians that named the ‘Skins.

Names are adopted because of the characteristics associated with it. Names such as the Vikings, Celtics, Hebrews, Spartans, Trojans and all Indian tribes were picked because the were associated with tenacity and courage.

Still, Bob, since we are tolerant and progressive here we are going to support you in your crusade. And, in the name of social justice, we are going to go a step further.

We are going to demand that the name of the Washington Redskins be changed to the Washington Rednecks.

That’s right those poor white folk who have run things for far too long and who you believe to the be cause of all the nation’s problems  must get their long-overdue comeuppance. The Capital’s football team must named for them.

We look forward to joining you in this fight albeit granted that you will be likely safely in the booth doing the play by play.

Washington Rednecks, Name Change Proposal. Let us all make things right and just!

Obamacare Republic

Stop blaming President Obama for sabotaging the nation’s health care system. After all, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act wasn’t all his doing. He had plenty of help from congressional Democrats.

House and Senate Democrats were instrumental in coercing their colleagues to vote for the legislation, which offended about half the voting public at the time it was enacted, and while the lawmakers may not have been aware of all the ill effects their actions would have three years later, apparently those same Democrats support the disastrous law to this day.

Whether intentionally or not, these Democrats were complicit with Obama in the many misleading statements — or outright lies — he told us about how terrific the health care reform law would be.

A stunning 17-minute YouTube video compiles the many claims the president made publicly while pitching his so-called health care reform legislation:

http://youtu.be/KxWMbqxgMDo

The president told Americans not to worry, they would be able to keep their current physicians after his massive health care system overhaul passed Congress; that insurance premiums would fall by $2,500 annually.

However, people are now finding out their premiums are rising significantly, and are unsure whether they’ll always be able to keep their doctors if forced into a new government-approved health plan.

Answer to yesterday’s puzzle: The House of Representatives cannot only refuse, but they alone can propose the supplies requisite for the support of government. They, in a word, hold the purse . . . This power over the purse may, in fact, be regarded as the most complete and effectual weapon with which any constitution can arm the immediate representatives of the people, for obtaining a redress of every grievance, and for carrying into effect every just and salutary measure.

Funding Jihadists While Denying Military Benefits

Andrew C. McCarthy, the fed prosecutor who successfully convicted the first World Trade Center bombers, has a fascinating column at NationalReview.com pointing out the Obama Administration fought like a badger to keep from getting military survivors their rightful death benefits while insisting on supplying foreign aid to jiadists in Syria.

McCarthy notes that Obama only allowed the death benefits after a unified response from the GOP.

“Democrats can be moved if unified Republicans make the pressure intense enough,” McCarthy noted.

Basic Ed Funding Study Sought

Legislation has been introduced to examine the basic education funding formula for kindergarten through 12th-grade education in Pennsylvania, according to State Rep. Jim Cox (R-129).

“House Bill 1738, which I have co-sponsored, would establish a commission to study and make recommendations for a new formula for distributing state funding for basic education, operating in a similar manner as the Special Education Funding Commission created under Act 3 of 2013,” said Cox

This commission would be comprised of members from the House and Senate, along with representatives from the Pennsylvania Department of Education and the executive branch. The overall goal would be to develop a formula that takes into account each school district’s market value/personal income aid ratio, equalized millage rate, geographic price differences, enrollment levels, local support and other factors.

The bill is in the House Education Committee.

Marking Fire Prevention Month

The Pennsylvania House has approved a resolution recognizing Pennsylvania Fire Prevention Month, which is October, and National Fire Prevention Week, which is the week in which Oct. 9 falls, State Rep. Jim Cox reports.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, U.S. fire departments responded to 370,000 home structure fires in 2011, resulting in 2,520 civilian deaths and nearly $7 billion in damages.

To ensure proper fire safety, officials suggest practicing these things:

–Have working smoke detectors on every level of the home that are tested monthly and kept free of dust. Batteries should be changed at least once a year.

–Never overload circuits or extension cords. Do not place cords and wires under rugs, over nails or in high traffic areas. Immediately shut off and unplug appliances that sputter, spark or emit an unusual smell. Have them professionally repaired or replaced.

–Practice an escape plan from every room in the house. Caution everyone to stay low to the floor when escaping from fire and never to open doors that are hot. Select a location where everyone can meet after escaping the house. Get out first, and then call for help.

Ignore Howard Zinn, Celebrate Columbus

Ignore Howard Zinn, Celebrate ColumbusIgnore Howard Zinn, Celebrate Columbus –Let us today, this Columbus Day — granted the official observation is Monday — ignore Howard Zinn and celebrate the guy who, for all intents and purposes, discovered America.

Vinland, after all, never really took.

Howard Zinn was a socialist who wrote a book call “A People’s History of the United States” which can be read free online at a site, appropriately enough regarding Zinn, called HistoryIsAWeapon.com.

Zinn claims that America has always been ruled by oppressors — the 1 percenters who own a third of the wealth and keep control by fermenting dissent among the 99 percent who are the rest of us  — and starts his claim with Columbus who he says committed genocide on the residents of the West Indies.

It seems to be the theme pushed by the hipster crowd this 2013.

Well, the truth is the Spanish were pretty rough on the native peoples of the Caribbean, something we know from Spanish sources, but the cruelty was obviously not done at the direction of Spanish authorities as steps were taken to stop it when complaints reached them. Further, the native peoples of the Caribbean were not without their flaws either. The name for the Caribbean comes from the Carib tribe, from whence we also get the word cannibal.

And while Columbus was  far from perfect he does not appear to be the gratuitously cruel tyrant Zinn and our hipster friend claim him to be. In Columbus’ own words this is what he says about the Lucayan peoples of the Bahamas who Zinn et al alleges he mutilated and slaughtered: “They are very gentle and without knowledge of what is evil; nor do they
murder or steal… . Your Highness may believe that in all the world
there can be no better people … they have the sweetest talk in the
world, and are always laughing.

It seems the revisionists are getting their signals crossed somewhere, which is understandable as Zinn is a rather bad historian.

America is a place that allowed tens of millions of Europeans and Asians to escape the feudalism that infected their homelands and her discovery only deserves to be celebrated. Even Africans should celebrate. Slavery existed in Africa — it wasn’t Europeans doing the slavecatching — before the trans-Atlantic slave trade and it was only after the founding of the United States did the push begin to end it. Pennsylvania was the first recognized government in the world, maybe in history, to ban slavery which happened in 1780 in the middle of the Revolutionary War.

Our hipster ironically wants a day named for Bishop Bartolomé de las Casas and there is a point to that as the Bishop is one of history’s good guys.  On the other hand, he was the one who suggested that the labor lost due to the death of Indians be replaced by Africans and some credit him with the start of the trans-Atlantic slave trade.

History is a bit more nuanced than Zinn and the hipster crowd make it out to be.

One more bit of irony:  Zinn’s work was popularized by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck who grew up near Zinn and were family friends. Damon and Affleck are now part of the one-percenter crowd. They have yet to give most of their money to the rest of us, and certainly have not led any crusades to end the tax breaks for performing artists who receive mega millions per film.
