Presidents Military Service — Twenty-six of the 45 United States presidents served in the military. Two (Washington and Monroe) were veterans of the American Revolution; three (Jackson, William Henry Harrison and Tyler) were veterans of the War of 1812; two (Taylor and Grant) were veterans of the Mexican War; one (Lincoln) was the veteran of an Indian war; six (Grant, Hayes, Garfield, Arthur, Harrison and McKinley) were veterans of the Civil War; one (Theodore Roosevelt) was a veteran of the Spanish American War; one (Truman) was a veteran of World War I; eight (every president from Eisenhower to George H.W. Bush) was a veteran of World War II; and one (George W. Bush) was a Vietnam-era Cold War veteran.
