Robert Sherwood, the playwright, failed to pass freshman English at Harvard. His professor is probably still blushing. Sherwood, after going out into the real world, won three Pulitzer Prizes for drama in six years.
We tell a similar story at Ursinus about one of her more famous alumni, JD Salinger. It’s said he failed English. But I don’t think he actually completed a semester before dropping out. Another Salinger-Ursinus story is that he based Holden Caulfield’s school on Ursinus. but that, too, is really more of a campus legend.
