    To say he was “British” needs clarification. He was “British”, but not in our modern sense of the word, which applies to the inhabitants of Great Britain since the Act of Union, and takes in the Anglo-Saxons, Scots, and Welsh, as well as the people from other regions of the world who have immigrated to the UK.

    He was a Romanized Briton, that is, a Roman Celt, born in what was still a Roman province, Britannia. That’s distinct from the other Celtic tribes, including the Welsh tribes, the Scots, and the Irish, who were not conquered and were outside the province.
