Here’s something squirrelly: South Koreans eat acorns. A lot of them. The country imports 9,000 tons a year from China. The government has had to pass strict laws against gathering them in forests. Violators face a five year prison sentence.
The Native Americans also ate them long before the rest of us got here. I’ve read on the Internet, so it must be true, that if you leach out the bitter tannins from them, they’re acceptable for human consumption. Maybe the squirrels are on to something!
And the South Koreans. One of the big problems there is that acorns have become so popular it is affecting the squirrels.
Yeah, I know the Indians used them, but that yes, they had to prepare them to remove the tannins. I don’t remember if they used ashes and soaked them, but I think they pounded them into flour. You can survive on them, if necessary.
I read that in a book, by the way, before there was an Internet 😉
