That’s an interesting bit of info, but I’m not sure I agree with the author’s claim that the “modern image” of American Indians is one of “sickly victims succumbing to European diseases.” A person can be in robust good health, contract a communicable disease and die from it. If it’s a particularly virulent disease, and your population has never been exposed to it, you’re in some peril.

    Does anyone else think that his remark is not really a valid one? Do any of you picture “sickly victims” when you think of any American Indians? I have never heard that or seen that image, anywhere.

    In fact, I think the image most people have of Indians is of robust noble savages, living in harmony with an unspoilt Nature. That’s not an accurate image, either, and it owes a lot to 18th century ideas about native people, most notably ideas presented by Rousseau. But again, I just don’t think anyone pictures sickly weaklings, when he thinks of an Indian.

    Maybe that’s another one of those ideas that so dumb that only an intellectual believes it.
