Ballad of Chevy Chase William Lawrence Sr Omnibit 9-15-20

A chase in Merrie Olde Englande was a hunt. Cheviot Hills straddles the Anglo-Scottish border and has been known as “Chevy”. The Ballad of Chevy Chase tells the story of a large English hunting party that the Scots mistook as an invading army and attacked resulting in a bloody battle.

Yes, the once-famous comedian/actor is named for it.

  1. We get our word “chase” from the French word for “hunt”. “catch” comes from the same root, too, the Latin “captare”.
A hunter or huntsman in French is a chasseur, in Italian, a cacciatore, in Spanish, a cazador.
“Chasseur” also became the word for a light infantryman, especially a scout, because originally huntsmen and foresters were recruited for such tasks. In German, it’s a Jäger (anglicized as a name as “Yaeger” or “Yeager”).
Chicken cacciatore really means, “Chicken, hunter’s style”, just as a Jägerschnitzel is a hunter’s style cutlet.
