Barbara McKee was a secretary whose friends called her Bobby. She worked for Monument Records and her boss was the legendary Fred Foster. Kris Kristofferson needed help with the name of the subject for his song and Foster suggested he use hers.
Kristofferson misheard it and that’s how Me and Bobby McGee came to be.
And no, Anthony, the first hit with it was not by Janis Joplin by the Roger “King of the Road” Miller.
