The heaviest wolf to be taken by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service was killed on 70 Mile River in east-central Alaska on July 12, 1939. It weighed 175 pounds.

  1. That makes it about the size of the legendary but extinct Dire Wolf, as in Game of Thrones, which BTW I didn’t watch except for a few clips here and there.

In the Grateful Dead song, “Dire Wolf”, it’s described as “six hundred pounds of sin”, but when they later found out the real dire wolves were nowhere near that size, they decided to leave the song as it was anyway. And why not? It was supposed to have the feel of a frontier legend, and as we all know, nothing gets any smaller as those tales are passed along šŸ™‚
