It was an unknown Dutchman who invented roller skates. Ice skates had long been used as winter transportation on canal-covered Holland but one summer in the early 1700s this fellow nailed wooden spools strips of wood, attached them to his shoes and went skating through the streets. He called them “skeelers.”
