The French cooked up an imaginative scheme to populate Louisiana when they ruled it in 1720. Prisoners were offered freedom if they would emigrate there upon the condition they marry a prostitute and take her with them. The newlyweds were then chained together and taken to ship for their honeymoon voyage.
