Print encyclopedias — William Lawrence Sr Omnibit 11-27-19

Yes Anthony, print encyclopedias still exist. You can get the 2020 World Book print edition for $999. The 2019 edition goes for half that.

The Encyclopedia Britannica, however, — which started in 1768 and is the longest running English-language encyclopaedia — stopped its print edition in 2010.

  1. I suspect I am writing for more than just myself here–but who has room to store a many-volumed print encyclopedia, along with the “yearbooks” they will then talk you into buying every year thereafter? Many of us are trying to downsize the weight and volume of possessions we carry, and are fine with looking things up online instead of in a book.

But there are limits to this kind of thinking. Devotional books are also better as actual books, because who doesn’t write in them? You can’t do that on a screen. And if you’re going to read a novel or short story collection in bed, you need a book, because a tablet or Lappie just doesn’t have the right feel. And crossword puzzles are better with paper and pen or pencil, despite the problems some of us have reading our own printing!
