  1. The Native Americans also ate them long before the rest of us got here. I’ve read on the Internet, so it must be true, that if you leach out the bitter tannins from them, they’re acceptable for human consumption. Maybe the squirrels are on to something!

    1. Yeah, I know the Indians used them, but that yes, they had to prepare them to remove the tannins. I don’t remember if they used ashes and soaked them, but I think they pounded them into flour. You can survive on them, if necessary.
