Answer to yesterday’s puzzle: The more is given the less the people will work for themselves, and the less they work the more their poverty will increase.

Hey GOP, Let Bloggers Be Your Debate Mods

Roger Simon, who runs PJMedia.Com and is noted for his Moses Wine detective books, is telling the Republicans to stop being the stupid party and divorce itself from the old media.

He suggests that they start using independent bloggers to moderate their debates.
“The mainstream media overtly and covertly made mincemeat of the Republican candidates during the primary debates, effectively neutering them for the main event,” he said.
“The (old media) performed the role of an unopposed air force in a softening up operation against a Third World country before the ground troops are brought in to mop up,” he said.
And we couldn’t have said it any better.

Amtrak loses $1 billion per year

Amtrak loses $1 billion per year.

And this is despite the fact the riders have increased from 21.8 million annually to 30 million over the last decade. A thank you letter to the TSA is warranted.

What many liberals don’t get is that money isn’t a magic solution to all problems but a mere communications tool. Yes, if Amtrak was run for a profit the Sunset Limited from LA to New Orleans would disappear. On the other hand, prices would drop for those going from Boston to D.C. and points in between and travelers would be confident of getting a seat. Maybe even the station in Chester would reopen.

And taxpayers would have more money to spend on things they actually want. such as buying a motorcycle and riding that from LA to the Big Easy. Pretend you’re Peter Fonda.

By the way, the tracks between LA and New Orleans wouldn’t be mothballed. They’d be leased to one of our privately owned freight lines which are the most cost effective in the world. Remember environmentalists, it is a lot better for the planet for a person to travel by motorcycle and let 5,000 refrigerators travel by rail.

Delco Offers Vets Free ID Cards

Delaware County, Pa. began offering veterans, Nov. 28, free photo identification which will give them discounts at participating businesses and to allow them to register their DD-214 at the Office of the Recorder of Deeds.

Registering the DD-214 or equivalent military discharge document provides a safe back up for these important documents.
The discounts are at the discretion of the business. Businesses offering discounts will get a certificate of participation and recognition on the County’s  Veterans Affairs website.
This is just one way that we can show our appreciation to veterans of all ages who bravely served our country in all branches of the military,” said County Council Vice Chairman Mario J. Civera Jr., a U.S. Air Force veteran.
For information about the Delaware County Veterans ID Program, or any other veteran’s services, contact the Department of Veterans Affairs at 610-891-4645 or visit www.co.delaware.pa.us.

Book Review — Ask Deborah

Ask Deborah is a great little book that can be read in less than an hour written by Mary Hickey, a former Delaware County journalist who moved out to Ohio.

It’s a series of short answers a advice columnist writing circa 33 AD would answer questions from Biblical figures.
It’s gentle and uplifting and we whole-heartedly recommend it. It would make an excellent Christmas present.
She also includes a well-thought essay on writing religious humor and how to avoid giving offense.

Watchstander Is Online

The 14-mile stretch of the Delaware River bordering Delaware County, Pa. is now covered by Boeing Watchstander Integrated Security Solutions, which provides 24-hour surveillance, detection, identification and recognition at key sites.

Watchstander cameras show live activity including boat traffic along the Delaware with views of the refineries, shipping terminals, PPL Park, Commodore Barry Bridge and Harrah’s Casino and Racetrack.
Boeing got the contract to install it in July 2011. The announcement that it was online was made Oct. 16.

“Delaware County is home to refineries, two-thirds of Philadelphia International Airport is in the County, plus the Delaware River runs parallel to an interstate highway and major railroad lines, which demands that we provide the most advanced security available for this region,” said District Attorney Jack Whelan.
