Hill Prison Guards Getting 2 Hours Sleep Between Shifts

Hill Prison Guards Getting 2 Hours Sleep Between Shifts — Albert Johnson of Morton, a corrections officer and union representative at George Hill Prison, told Delaware County (Pa) Council, yesterday, Aug. 20, that the prison remains in crisis especially for the guards.

“It is not safe there,” he said. “Inmates are able to go to any door at any time go into another cell and commit criminal things against each other.”

He said the $25 the county gives the inmates hurts them as they are extorted for it from other inmates.

Further, Johnson said the prison cannot retain officers due to the conditions.

“You see pictures and slides of new classes coming up, maybe one, maybe two will stay,” he said.

He says due to the work scheduling cooked up by the prison administration, officers find themselves getting between “two and three hours sleep between each shift.”

This obviously is a serious safety issue.

Johnson called for a return to split shifts which were in place before this present bunch took over and named the inexperienced Laura Williams as warden.

Ms. Williams is stepping down and Johnson said those he represents desperately want to work with whoever takes over.

Kimberly Brown of Colwyn, a case worker at Hill, was joyful at the impending change in administration.

“It’s a lovely day at George W. Hill,” she said. “Armageddon day is scheduled for Sept. 5.”

That would be Ms. Williams last day.

Ms. Brown warned about naming any of the deputy wardens as interim warden along with other administrators.

Joe Finio of Marple said Council ignores important things like the prison and the Don Guanella project in lieu of feel-good things like the human relations commission.

Delco Continues To Ignore CYS Issues

Delco Continues To Ignore CYS Issues — LaPenta of Upper Chichester returned to Delaware County (Pa) Council last night, Aug. 20, and again told them the system regarding domestic protective services for children and adults is broken.

She noted victims complaints and concerns are often ignored and real squeaky wheels suffer retailiation.

“While you sit in silence the abuse gets worse,” she said. “Victims don’t come forward because they know nothing will happen. Nothing or worse, retaliation. Family court victims, CYS victims, survivors of this misuse of PFAs, we are silenced. Not only by our abusers but by the very institutions meant to protect us.”

She said she was “exhausted” by being told that nothing could be done and that it if was a councilmember’s family member she could guarantee that something would get done.

What say you Christine Reuther?

Never mind, we know what you would say.

It just wouldn’t be truthful.

Ballard Spahr To Be Bond Czar For $115M Delco Float

Ballard Spahr To Be Bond Czar For $115M Delco Float — Delaware County (Pa) Council, last night, Aug. 20, held the first reading of a bond float calling for a “general obligation debt in the maximum aggregate principal amount of $115,000,000.”

They named the Ballard Spahr law firm as general counsel for the issuance.

Ballard Spahr is chaired by Mark S. Stewart.

Who is Mark S. Stewart?

Stewart had been chair of the firm until recently and is now its senior council.

Oh, he’s also the hubby of Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon who represents Delco.

Remember, Democrat voters your party is the party of the little guy.

Wish we could tell you what Ballard Spahr’s cut of the bond float is going to end up being. We are confident, though, it could pay a rich man’s county taxes for a decade or two.

By the way, we never heard Council mention a dollar amount in the presentation. Maybe we just missed it. It can be watched here.

The vote will be next month.

Ballard Spahr is a Philly firm, by the way.

Council couldn’t find one from Delco to handle things?

Sorry, silly question.

Delco Human Rights Commission Will Protect Men Using The Ladies Room

Delco Human Rights Commission Will Protect Men Using The Ladies Room — Delaware County (Pa) Council, last night, Aug. 20, heard the first reading of an ordinance for an human relations commission.

This commission will be empowered to levy fines and penalties. This means unnecessary headaches for employers, landlords and whoever else finds himself with a responsibility of providing services or products.

The ordinance creates a myriad of protected classes — including transgender — and these protected people will get to file complaints and grievances.

Say goodbye to private bathrooms, ladies of Delco.

Oh, the law applies to education too. Natural born girls can expect to ride the bench if they even bother trying out for the school team.

Unless, federal law should “Trump” it, as appears likely.

Several spoke in favor of the ordinance. These included two mothers of transgender children, and Rosalind Spigel, a member of the Haverford Township Human Relations Commission.

Paul Rumley of Springfield gave damning reasons as to why the law was bad. The commission is superfluous as the state has one already, he noted, and merely adds another level of bureaucracy to Delco government.

He quoted a column by former Delco Councilman Wally Nunn, pointing out that the protected categories in the county now include race, ethnicity, religion, creed, national origin, sex, pregnancy, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, genetic information, GED over high school diploma, disability, source of income, age, height, weight, veteran status, guide animals, and even domestic or sexual violence victim status.

Rumley further explained that while the commissioners will be unpaid their staff must certainly will be. The burden on county taxpayers will grow ever larger.

Media GOP Chairman Michael Straw also addressed the issue. Straw noted he was openly gay and expressed support for the non-discrimination rules but had serious skepticism regarding the commission due to the cost that will be most certainly associated with it.

Leftist Activist Named Delco Solicitor

Leftist Activist Named Delco Solicitor — A woman with a history of radical leftist activism has been appointed solicitor of Delaware County, Pa.

Lee Awbrey, who had worked in the public defender’s office, will replace Jonathan Lichtenstein.

The vote, last night, Aug. 20, by County Council was unanimous.

Speaking in favor of the appointment was Chris Welch (phonetic) of Havertown who is Delco’s chief public defender and represented a contingent of public defenders office.

Carris Kocher of Concord, however, pointed out that Ms. Awbrey after graduating from Berekley had paid positions with Greenpeace and Bernie Sanders.

Can those who want fair elections expect fairness in dealing with Delco?

That’s a fair question.
