  1. In German universities and schools, the Latin word and the concept was adopted for detention, or Karzer (kar-tser). Originally, at a university in the Middle Ages, it was detention for a severe offense. By the 19th century, it came to represent more what we would expect for detention at a school. It became a point of honor as a university student to have been assigned Karzer at least once during your time at school.
