Honor Flight Philadelphia’s June 2014 trip returned to Saint Kevin’s Church on Sproul Road in Springfield, Pa. this evening, June 21, with a crowd of flag waving well-wishers greeting the 160 veterans who participated.
Honor Flight Philadelphia gives veterans an all-expense paid trip to the memorials in Washington followed by a banquet.
Veteran Helen Collins dances with Greater Overbrook String Band Captain Bill Razzano. The band provided the background music as the veterans marched down the red carpet.
Also, on hand were the Knights of Columbus; honor guards from the Marines, Army and Air Force; Congressman Pat Meehan; Philadelphia Eagles cheerleaders and the Eagle’s Swoop mascot; and the Chick-fil-A cow.
Trucks from several volunteer fire companies provided a ladder arch with a hanging flag over Sproul Road and over the entrance to Saint Kevin’s.
The first trip of 2014Ā for Honor Flight Philadelphia is June 21.Ā Participating will be 176 World War II veterans.
The return will be 6:15 p.m., at St. Kevin’s Church, 200 W. Sproul Road, Springfield Pa. 19064.
Volunteers are sought to welcome them back with cheers and flag waving.
Honor Flight provides an all-expense paid trip for veterans to Washington D.C. to visit their memorials. The veterans are treated to a banquet upon their return.
The Women’s Auxiliary of American Legion Post 667 will hold an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast, 9 a.m. to noon, Sunday, May 4, a the post, 1112 Steel Road, Havertown, Pa.
On the menu are pancakes covered with warm maple syrup, country breakfast sausage, fresh brewed coffee and orange juice.
It will be all you can eat for $5 at an Auxiliary Pancake Breakfast, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Sunday, March 30 at American Legion Manoa Post 667.
On the menu is pancakes, sausage, juice and coffee.
Proceeds benefit Honor Flight Philadelphia which provides all-expense-paid days of honor for aging veterans. Their next event is June 21 and will leave from Saint Kevin’s Church in Springfield.

The largest Honor Flight Philadelphia trip yet was welcomed back to Delaware County, today, Nov. 2, with a red carpet and cheering throng at Saint Kevin Parish on Sproul Road, Springfield. Volunteer firefighters made fire ladder arches above Sproul and at the entrance to the parking lot from which dangled huge American flags.
Honor Flight is national non-profit organization founded in 2005 to give aging or terminally ill veterans an all-expense-paid day of honor in Washington D.C. The local group founded by Springfield resident Andrew Schiavello has been striving to limit the participants to World War II veterans since their average age is over 90.
This trip featured seven buses with over 150 veterans who were matched by the same number of guardians. Among the stops wereĀ Arlington National Cemetery, the Women’s Memorial, the Iwo
Jima, Korea and Vietnam memorials and of course the War World II
Memorial.
Upon their arrival they were treated to a dinner and floor show featuring the Manhattan Dolls in the parish hall.
In the welcoming contingent were Boy Scouts, a group of flag wavers from Saint Anastasia School, military re-enactors, Congressman Pat Meehan, County Councilman David White, Media Mayor Bob McMahon, Swoop from the Philadelphia Eagles and the always entertaining and internationally renowned Phillie Phanatic.
The music for the red carpet walk to the hall was provided by bagpiper William Erskine who played without let up.
The arrival for Honor Flight Philadelphia’s latest trip is 6 p.m., today, Nov. 2, at Saint Kevin’s Parish Hall, 200 W. Sproul Road, Springfield, Pa. 19064, and it is hoped a big crowd will be on had to wave flags and cheer the vetsĀ when they return.
This is the organization’s largest trip yet with seven buses with over 300 participants.
