Springfield Teachers Pact Vote Looms

Regina Scheerer of the Delaware County Patriots reports that the Springfield (Pa.) School Board is posed to vote on five-year teacher  contract, June 21.

And a rather sane pact it appears to be.
According to the District’s website, salaries will be frozen the first year; raised 1.62 percent the second year albeit with a $500 off-scale payment; raised 1.8 percent the third year; and 2 percent in years four and five.

The unions medical insurance contribution will be kept at 10 percent the first year, raised to 12 percent for years two through four; and raised to 13 percent in year five.

The meeting starts 7 p.m. at the McLaughlin Center at the high school on Leamy Avenue, and may be watched on Comcast Channel 11 or FIOS Channel 29.
Kudos to the Springfield School Board and the Springfield Education Association for sanity.

Proposed Springfield School Budget Would Hike Taxes $110 For Average Homeowner

Regina  Scheerer attended tonight’s (May 10) Springfield (Delco) School Board where the final budget was presented.

She says it would increase property taxes 2.7 percent   28.730 mills which would mean the average homeowner would pay $110 more than last year.

Last year’s increase was 2.76% at 27.975 mills.

Say says the new 5-year teacher contract will be a factor, but will not cause an increase above what is proposed.

She says that a public comment on the budget will be taken at a hearing 5:30 p.m., next Thursday at the McLaughlin Center.

The proposed budget can be found at  at www.ssdcougars.org, under District, Financial Information, then Budget.

It will also be available at the Township Library.

Brazen Fox Of Brookside Road

Brazen Fox Of Brookside Road
This fox (right corner by the shed) was photographed shortly before noon, today, April 24 on Brookside Road at Greenhill Road in Springfield, Pa. It ran around the house a few times fascinating the little girl who watched from her storm door and maybe making her mom a bit nervous.

Springfield Road Curb Cuts

Springfield Road Curb CutsSpringfield Road Curb Cuts — The curb cuts installed on Springfield Road in Springfield, Pa. back in the early ’90s to assist those in wheelchairs in accordance with the American With Disabilities Act  are now (April 2012) being ripped up at much expense and disruption so “tactile detectable warning” tiles can be added for blind people using canes.

This isn’t going to make it easier for those in wheelchairs and one suspects that the vast majority of blind people — like the vast majority of Americans — would rather our budget deficits be address rather than create expensive feel-good, make-work projects.

Rusty Carter Welcome Home

Rusty Carter Welcome HomeRussell (Rusty) L. Carter was welcomed home this afternoon, April 14, with a police escort that included cars from just about every jurisdiction in Delaware County, fire engines, Mummers, dozens of motorcyclists from Warriors’ Watch Riders and a crowd of hundreds that lined his small block on Orchard Road between Leamy and Woodland avenues in Springfield Pa.

The procession proceeded through an arch made from ladder trucks from the Springfield and Clifton Heights volunteer fire companies from which hung an enormous American flag.

Rusty served as a member of the 101st Airborne Division and was deployed to Afghanistan. In July 2010, he came under hostile fire and suffered a concussion. A month after being treated from his wounds he returned to his unit.

On Jan. 2, 2011 while returning from a night mission, Rusty was in the turret of his Humvee that experienced mechanical problems and went over the side of an unprotected bridge, crashing into a ravine and coming to rest in the river bed 50 feet below. While the five other soldiers on board sustained recoverable injuries, Rusty suffered several broken bones, severe lacerations to his face and skull and a complete C 4 separation of the spine.

Rusty has lost all motor function; he is paralyzed from the chest down and has no feeling from the elbows down. He also suffers from minor traumatic brain injury. The prognosis is that he is permanently disabled, will never walk again and no longer has use of his hands.

The event was organized by Warriors’ Watch Riders, an organization of motorcyclists dedicated to honoring those who served pictured below turning onto Orchard Road from Leamy Avenue.

On Jan. 2, 2011 while returning from a night mission, Rusty was in the turret of his Humvee when, after experiencing mechanical problems, it went over the side of an unprotected bridge, crashing into a ravine and coming to rest in the river bed 50 feet below. While the five other soldiers on board sustained recoverable injuries, Rusty suffered several broken bones, severe lacerations to his face and skull and a complete C 4 separation of the spine.

While he has undergone spinal and neck surgeries, he is paralyzed from the elbows down.

The Great Walsh Park Dog Raid

A decades-long tradition for dog owners in Springfield, Pa. has been to let their pets roam free at certain times of the day in Walsh Park which takes up 19.4 acres between Brookside and Scenic roads.

The township had been well aware of this unleashed transgression of ordinance and had turned a blind eye.
The county, however, has apparently figured the situation provides a way to reap some revenue.
The site was reportedly raided by county agents a short time ago. Several were fined $100 and one outspoken protestor was nailed with a $2,000 fine as the story goes.
The dog lovers of Springfield are not happy.
Hat tip Robert.
