Motorists Must Now Give Cyclists 4 Feet In Pa.

A new law that aims to improve safety for bicyclists recently went into effect in Pennsylvania, notes State Rep. Jim Cox (R-129)

Act 3 of 2012 establishes minimum safe-passing distances and requires the operator of a motor vehicle to pass to the left of a bicyclist within not less than 4 feet at a careful rate of speed. The new law also requires bicycle operators to use reasonable efforts so as not to impede the normal and reasonable flow of traffic and calls for them to operate on the far right side of the roadway when proceeding at less than the prevailing speed.

Pennsylvania has now joined 18 other states in enacting such provisions.

  1. Does this mean that bicyclists will now begin to obey traffic laws? I constantly see cyclists blow through stop signs and red lights.

  2. Only if they are conservative Republicans. Democrat liberals will, as always, get a free ride. Hell’s bells they will be praised.

  3. Not a Repub issue. Not a Dem issue. It’s a common sense issue.

Some motorists don’t consider cyclists. Some cyclists ignore the law.

Common sense is all that’s needed, and fairness.
