Franken Rose PhotoThese two buddies enjoying a joke (about women?) perfectly illustrate a big reason for this nation’s problems. A society can’t survive if it is based on lies.

Sen. Al Franken and newly unemployed commentator Charlie Rose for years have been setting social mores and controlling the information we have been receiving much of which was out-and-out falsehood. Matthew Shepard was murdered because he was gay? George W. Bush was a racist? Women make 77 cents on the dollar compared to men? Donald Trump colluded with the Russians?

Etc. etc. etc.

All were repeated as truths by the crowd to which these guys belonged and all were lies. One of Shepard’s murderers, it turns out, was a fellow drug dealer and occasional lover. Homophobia had nothing to do with it.  Bush, of course, was governor when James Byrd’s murderers received the death penalty. And women make the same amount as men for the same job, workload and skill level. 

And while there is no reason to think President Trump colluded with the Russians there is plenty of reason to think his cool-crowd-connected opponent did.

Of course, unless you get your info from alternative sources such as talk radio or independent websites, you are not going to know this.

And now it turns out that Franken and Rose and whole lot of others were self-centered pigs who were laughing up their sleeves at the truth for the last four decades.

Well, it paid well.

Charles Manson Dies 45 Years Late — Charles Manson is dead and it’s 45 years too late.

I was eight years old in the summer of 1969 when the Manson cult killed nine innocent people. It horrified me and I’d put my fingers in my ears when the story was reported on the  radio.

But as my understanding of the world then came from TV shows where the bad guys would be caught and justice done, I had faith that would happen.

And they did catch the bad guys.

Justice, though, was never done.

Manson and three of his followers — others would be convicted of other murders — were found guilty in 1971 and received the death penalty. The Supreme Court, however, bizarrely ruled the next year that the death penalty as it existed was unconstitutional and commuted all death sentences to life in prison.

And so Manson live to an old age with the cool crowd calling him a hero. Rolling Stone magazine, which hopefully soon goes the way of Manson, portrayed him as a visionary and expressed sympathy for him. Hippie underground newspapers named him Man of the Year.  Chic radical Bernadine Dohrn expressed awe and admiration.  Ms. Dohrn and her rapey husband Bill Ayers would go on to become Barack Obama’s mentors.

Pop singers adopt his name and his image can still be found on t-shirts.

I really am a fan of Pope Francis but he is dead wrong on the death penalty. The world — and America — would be exponentially better off if that piece of human debris kept his date with the gas chamber 45 years ago.

Remembrance Day Feast Benefits Honor Flight

Remembrance Day Feast Benefits Honor Flight— Crown Chapter, Daughters of the British Empire will be commemorating Remembrance Day (Veterans Day), 4 -11 p.m., tomorrow, Nov. 19 at Stoney’s British Pub in Wilmington, Del.

While there are signs that Pennsylvania’s overall economy might be improving, the critical question is whether it’s growing fast enough to cover some less-than-optimum actions by state government employed to close a series of budget shortfalls, say researchers at the Allegheny Institute for Public Policy.

“If the economy and jobs continue to improve, tax collections almost certainly will pick up as well,” say Frank Gamrat, a senior research associate, and Jake Haulk, president of the Pittsburgh think tank.

But the commonwealth must overcome numerous hurdles of its own making.

“(T)he state continues to face the seemingly intractable problems of corralling spending growth and balancing the budget without relying on gimmicks and the poor practice of borrowing to fund current spending,” the institute scholars say (in Policy Brief Vol. 17, No. 45).

On paper at least, budget gaps for fiscal years 2016-17 and 2017-18 have been closed. That, through a combination of expanded gambling options and substantial borrowing against future tobacco settlement receipts.

“Obviously, these borrowed funds will have to be repaid out of future tax revenues that will need to rise even further to cover those payments as well as to meet the likely shortfall in the next budget unless spending is curbed significantly,” Gamrat and Haulk note.

That budget, by the way, is due in a short three months. And it remains to be seen if gaming revenue projections will be met, considering that last year’s gambling income fell short.

There has been some upturn in the pace of tax revenue flowing to the state. But, again, will the gains be sustained? That is the question.

There are reasons to be optimistic. Job and income numbers as well as consumer confidence levels are moving higher.

After a slow start, corporate net income tax collections were quite strong from May through September, and stood 10.9 percent above the first quarter of fiscal 2016-17.

Through the first nine months of 2017, personal income tax collections have risen by 3 percent over the same 2016 period and are up a healthy 3.8 percent over year-ago results in the first fiscal quarter. Sales and use taxes also have experienced gains in the respective nine-month and first-quarter periods, by 3.6 and 3.9 percent.

That said, none of those three metrics is an indicator of future performance. But, “Given the enormous gains in (stock) share prices this year and the strengthening of home prices, consumer confidence has climbed … nationally and almost certainly in Pennsylvania as well,” Gamrat and Haulk say.

But Pennsylvania government could continue to be its own worst enemy.

“Given the missteps of the past two years, it will be absolutely necessary to hold spending in check until revenues can cover future spending and pay off the debt incurred to cover this year’s shortfall,” the think tank researchers stress.

“At some point, the commonwealth must shed its image as having a poor business climate if it wants to match national economic growth and have the wherewithal to deal with the legacy costs it faces.”

Roy Moore Accuser Scorecard — For those keeping track of the Swamp-inspired, pre-election accusations against Alabama Senate candidate Judge Roy Moore here they are:

Gloria Thacker Deason — Moore was 32 and Miss Thacker was 18 when they dated for several months in 1979. She said it never went beyond kissing and hugging and her parents knew they were dating. Moore doesn’t deny this albeit he takes issue with her claim that he bought her alcohol during dinner dates when she was below the then Alabama drinking age of 19.

Debbie Wesson Gibson — Moore was 34 and Miss Wesson was apparently 17 — the Washington Post story was not completely clear — when they dated for about three months in 1981. Her mother encouraged them. He played the guitar for her and read poetry to her. He kissed her twice during that time as per Miss Wesson. Moore doesn’t deny this one either.

Wendy Miller — Moore was 32 and Ms. Miller was 16 when Moore asked her mother for permission to date her in 1979. Her mother said no and that was that. Moore doesn’t deny this.

Becky Gray — Ms. Gray was 22 years old in the late 1970s when Moore asked her for her phone number several times. She became annoyed, complained and Moore stopped. By the way, Moore was never banned from the Gadsden Mall despite the reporting by some.

Gena Richardson — Ms. Richardson was 18 years old when Moore dated her in 1977. She said he gave her a “forceful” kiss. Horrors.

Those of us with 21st century, urban sensibilities find it troubling that a man in his 30s would date a girl in her teens and with reason as the expectation is now that a man dates for sex and not to seek a potential life-long mate. Once upon a time, though, these age differences were not scandalous as the man was understood to be looking for a wife to mother his children and the woman would be looking for an established breadwinner to be her husband and father her children. That this bewilders so many shows the degree to which our society has fallen. Moore was obviously not looking to abuse and lose these girls as no sexual impropriety occurred, as recognized by all,  which gets us to the remaining accusations.

Beverly Nelson — Mrs. Nelson said Moore tried to force her to have oral sex in 1977 when she was 16. Mrs. Nelson’s story has fallen apart. Her stepson is calling her a liar and In a public statement made with Democrat hack Gloria Allred, she neglected to note that Moore was the judge who dismissed her divorce case. Mrs Nelson also displayed a yearbook note purportedly signed by Moore that appears to have been forged.

Leigh Corfman — Mrs. Corfman said that when she was 14 in 1979, Moore took her to his home, stripped to his underwear, took off her outer clothes, and touched her on her bra and under pants. Pretty creepy. If true, Moore does not belong in public life. We don’t think it’s true.  Forty-year-old accusations without corroborating evidence made a month before an election should be rejected on principle. Moore has unambiguously denied this — along with the incident involving Mrs. Nelson — and the behavior she claims he exhibited is contradicted by how the other women used as examples of his bad character say he acted. You can’t have it both ways. Further, sickos don’t quit. If you want us to get off the Moore Express provide solid evidence of teenage mistresses after his marriage or how he hung out with Jeff Epstein and Bill Clinton.

Can’t do that? Well, we will just continue to accept that it is a hit job by Swamp Dwellers who fear a Sen. Roy Moore can’t be controlled and hence must not be allowed near the secrets of their corruption.

Tina Johnson —  Ms. Johnson, the eighth accuser, said Moore complimented her looks and grabbed her buttocks during a review about a child custody matter in 1991. She was 28. So what is it? Moore goes for teenagers or moms nearing 30? We will note that Ms. Johnson has convictions for writing bad checks and third degree theft, and that any woman can make this allegation if left alone with any man hence the allegation should be rejected on principle if made after 30 years.
