On  July 24, 1966 Michael Pelkey and Brian Schubert jumped off El Capitan in Yosemite Park using surplus military parachutes. They survived albeit with broken bones and gave birth to BASE jumping which means parachuting from Buildings, Antennae, Spans (bridges) and Earth (cliffs).

The sport is considered the most dangerous.

Pelkey and Schubert never jumped together again. They were scheduled to do so on Oct. 15, 2006 from the 900 foot New River Gorge Bridge in Fayetteville, W.V. where BASE jumping is legal for six hours ever year.

Schubert went first. He took too long to open his chute and died. He was 66.
