Bastille Day did not became a national holiday in France until 1880. The oldest military parade in Europe is held in Paris on it. France’s national bird is a chicken. Really.
Bastille Day and France’s national bird
In all fairness to the French, their national mascot is not a chicken, or more specifically, it’s a cock, the rooster, the male of the species, and symbol of pugnacity.
For all of the teasing we like to do about the French, I think it’s better to remember the comment that a famous general once made, perhaps Frederick the Great, who said they were good soldiers but poorly led. I think that was particularly true in 1940, and the cowardice, moral and otherwise, of their leaders is another good example of why we should avoid Statism.
Good point, Brad.
