New CPR Technique Is Simpler And Can Be Done By Anyone — Cathy Craddock has shared this link to a page at the University of Arizona’s College of Medicine in which a new easier and more effective technique of CPR is demonstrated.

It dramatically increases the survival rate of those suffering from cardiac arrest and one does not need certification to perform it

Exercise Tips For The Day

Experts say that just about the best exercises for the time-constrained office rat are squats, which work the glutes, quads, hamstrings and calves; and push ups which strengthen the chest, shoulders, triceps, back and abs.

For the squat, stand with feet hip-width apart and toes straight ahead. Bend the knees to the
floor, keeping the torso straight and abs pulled in tight. Keep your
knees behind your toes. Do not go lower than 90 degrees. Do 10 reps a day.

For  push-ups, face the floor, balancing on
your toe and hands. The hands should be wider than shoulders and the body in a straight line.  Neither sag nor stick your tail in the air.

Bend your arms and lower your body
to the floor, stopping when your elbows are at 90 degrees. Exhale and
push back up. Do 20 and take a 60-second break. Then do 20 more on your knuckles. You can vary this by putting your feet on a chair.

Now, if you are the type of person who tries to do wheelies on a bicycle at age 50 you’ll have probably broken your leg by now. Feel free to ignore this advice. You cannot do these exercises with a broken leg.

Psychopaths Spotted Via Speech

An article published Oct. 20 on  LiveScience.Com indicates that difficult-to-change speech patterns can unmask psychopaths.

Researchers deduced these patterns after interviewing  52 convicted murderers, 14 of whom were considered to be  psychopaths.

They  think it possible that  by using text-analysis software to search for these patterns on things like Craigslist postings, law enforcement will be able to solve serial killings .

The researchers say that the psychopaths used subordinating conjunctions such as “because” and “so that” more often than none-psychopaths; and that their speech was broken up far more than normal by ‘uhs’ and ‘ums’.

Just something to consider next time you watch a presidential address.

By the way, regarding the debate as to the difference between a psychopath and a sociopath, Kelly McAleer, Psy.D. claims that a psychopath acts according to an innate nature while a sociopath has been conditioned by his environment.

Sounds good to me but feel free to disagree.

Abortion Causes Major Mental Health Problems Major Study Shows

Women who have had an abortion have experienced an 81-percent increased risk of mental health problems according to a study published in this month’s (September 2011) British Journal of Psychiatry.

The study by Priscilla Coleman, a professor at Bowling Green State University in Ohio, involved 877,181 participants of whom 163, 831 had an abortion.

It shows that risks of anxiety and depression each rose by over a third after an
abortion, while the rates of suicidal behaviors and drug use more than
doubled.

The conclusion of the study calls into question the conclusions from traditional reviews and reveals  a moderate to highly increased risk of mental health problems after abortion.

“Consistent with the tenets of evidence-based medicine, this information should inform the delivery of abortion services, ” it says.

For those that don’t have subscriptions to the British Journal of Psychiatry more details can be found in this article on ETWNnews.Com

As Bedbug Assault Looms, Do We DIY DDT?

Bedbug Assault Looms, Do We DIY DDT? — Experts are predicting an bedbug explosion this summer so is it time to sneer in the face of the enviro-Nazis; invoke the spirt of Walter Steuber and follow the Delaware County tradition of homebrewing our own dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane?

Steuber was a  chemist who in the final days of World War II made DDT in the basement of his Swarthmore home. The desirable insecticide had been exclusively for military use and when it popped up for sale at two hardware stores in Media and Swarthmore the authorities investigated. When it was found that Steuber was not using priority chemicals, the government allowed civilians access to the near-miracle stuff.

And this led to the almost complete eradication of bedbugs in the USA.

Which have now made a comeback.

So do we start moonshining the stuff while petitioning our elected officials to rescind the 1972 DDT ban?

Probably best not.

While the near-absolute ban on the chemical strikes many as being irrational, emotion-driven and quasi-religious — especially given as to how DDT was indiscriminately misused and highly abused during its heyday — bedbugs  seem to have maintained the resistance they have developed to it.

So using it wouldn’t do much good.

There is, however, an effective anti-bedbug insecticide, propoxur,  that was pulled from the market after its manufacturer declined to spend several millions of dollars on testing the EPA was demanding .

Apparently, the EPA is concerned about toxicity to children after chronic exposure. One wonders exactly how much “chronic exposure” children would receive if it were restricted to hotels and such which are a major source of the spreading of the infestation.

Freeing propoxur, which was sold as Baygon , would be something about which to petition our elected officials.

In the meantime, here is a link to the EPA search engine of pesticides that it claims are safe and might have an effect on bedbugs.
