Faith Ryan Whittlesey, who chaired Delaware County Council in the late 1970s and was an integral member of Ronald Reagan’s campaign team and senior staff, died today, May 21.
She was 79.
She also served as the U.S. ambassador to Switzerland during the Reagan administration and represented the 166th District in the Pennsylvania State House.
She was a great conservative and hated by the liberals of her day.
Dorothy Mae Hayer, R.N., formerly from Eckley and Freeland, and until recently, a resident of Wilkes-Barre, fell asleep in the Lord on Saturday morning, May 12, 2018 in the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital, following a brief illness.
Born on July 11, 1937 in Hazleton, she was a daughter to the late Michael and Catherine (Kushner) Lozinak.
She was educated in the Freeland area schools, and later furthered her education toward her vocation by graduating from the former Philadelphia General Hospital School of Nursing.
Mrs. Hayer worked as a registered nurse for her entire professional career. Her employment included work in pediatric nursing in the maternity ward of the former Saint Joseph’s Hospital in Hazleton; Psychiatric nursing at the White Haven Center, White Haven and until her retirement, was employed at the Weatherwood-Carbon County Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center as both a Registered Nurse and as a Registered Nurse Assessment Coordinator (R.N.A.C.). Following her formal retirement from duties, Mrs. Hayer continued in her ministry and maintained working per diem in nursing until a few years ago at the age of seventy-five.
Mrs. Hayer was a member of Saint Mary of the Dormition Byzantine Catholic Church, Freeland for most of her life. In recent years, she held membership in Holy Assumption of Saint Mary Byzantine Catholic Church, North Wilkes-Barre. She was an active volunteer in both parishes faithfully.
Over the years, she served as a chaperone for parish Youth Group field trips; was a volunteer for parish summer festivals, and for several years, she served as Camp Nurse at the Eparchial Altar Server Retreat Camp held annually in Canadensis, PA.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her former spouse, Mr. James J. Hayer, and by brothers and sisters including John, Michael, and Daniel Lozinak, Colonel Mary M. Lozinak, U.S. Army (Ret.), Mrs. Helen Parsons, Miss Catherine Lozinak, Mrs. Anna Fifick, Mrs. Margaret Lawrence and Miss Agnes Lozinak.
Left to mourn her passing are her beloved son, Right Reverend Archpriest James G. Hayer, Protosyncellus (Vicar General) of the Eparchy of Passaic; Sister, Mrs. Elsie Palinko, West Haven, CT; Numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, fellow parishioners and dear friends.
Funeral services for Mrs. Hayer will be conducted on Saturday morning, May 19th at 10:00 a.m. celebrating the Office of Christian Burial with Divine Liturgy in Holy Assumption of Saint Mary Byzantine Catholic Church, 695 North Main Street, Wilkes-Barre, where Father Michael Kerestes is pastor.
Principal celebrant will be her son, Right Reverend Archpriest James G. Hayer. Presiding will be Bishop Kurt Burnette, Bishop of the Eparchy of Passaic. Attending will be Metropolitan William Skurla, Archbishop of Pittsburgh.
Relatives and friends may join Reverend Archpriest Hayer and his family for visitation and remembrances Friday evening from 6 until 8 p.m. directly in Saint Mary’s Byzantine Catholic Church, where a Parastas service will be conducted 7:30 p.m. with her son, officiating. Additional visitation will be held on Saturday morning from 9 a.m. until the time of Divine Liturgy.
Interment with the Rite of Committal will be private in the parish cemetery, Lake Street, Dallas.

The Rev. Billy Graham, who had done more to preserve this country’s freedom than just about any politician in this generation, has died.
We heard Rev. Graham preach at the Vet in 1992. Ed Rendell was mayor and shared the stage with him. Rendell left early.
Rest in peace, Rev. Graham. We suspect you will.
Chuck Martini R.I.P. — Good friend Charles C. (Chuck) Martini died Jan. 3. He was 77.

Charles C. Martini, “Chuck”, age 77, of Media, PA, died on January 3, 2018. Born and raised in Philadelphia, Chuck was a graduate of West Catholic High School, class of 1958 and Villanova University, class of 1962. He obtained his M.B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1964 and began a successful career in business and marketing. He served as the Director of Marketing for Laventhol & Howarth and later became the President of Martini & Assoc. He was a part-time faculty member in the Business School of Villanova University (1971-1996), a seminar leader, and an author. Chuck headed his own consulting practice, Marketing Consultants, from 1983-2004.
Chuck formerly resided in Broomall and Secane. He was an active parishioner of St. Mary Magdalen Church in Upper Providence. He was a member of Sons of Italy, Knights of Columbus, West Catholic Alumni Association, and the Delco Tea Party. Chuck enjoyed trap and skeet shooting and was a member of Delaware Co. Field & Stream Assoc.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, January 9th, 11 am at St. Mary Magdalen Church, 2400 N. Providence Rd. Media, PA 19063. Friends may call from 10 -11 am at the church. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.
John Bayard Anderson, the Republican who ran as a third-party candidate in 1980 against Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan, died Dec. 3. He was 95.
Anderson was a congressman who represented the 16th District of Illinois from 1961 to 1981. He received 7 percent of the vote during his presidential run including mine which was the first time I cast a presidential vote.
In hindsight I’m glad he lost, but he was a decent and honorable man.

Dear friend Linda Houldin passed away, Sept. 18. She was 68 and lived in Newtown Square.
Linda’s many accomplishments included serving on the Marple Newtown School Board and being a Newtown supervisor. She was instrumental in bringing to life the Delaware County Veterans Memorial.
She loved history and had served as executive director of The Delaware County Historical Society.
She is survived by her husband of 50 years John W.; her son John M.; her daughter Kimberly A. Cichanowsky (Marko); her 4 grandchildren Mark, Kristina, Kyle, and Michael; and her sister Susan Tait (Ronald).
There will be viewings, 5-8 p.m., tomorrow, Sept 22, and 8:30-9:30 Saturday morning at The D’Anjolell Memorial Home of Broomall, 2811 West Chester Pike Broomall, PA 19008.
The funeral Mass will be 10 a.m., Saturday, at St. Anastasia Church, 3301 West Chester Pike, Newtown Square, Pa. 19073.

Christina Kyj Pluta, beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt and friend, passed away on Sept. 6, surrounded by her family. Chris had a dynamic, gregarious personality and delighted in engaging friends and strangers alike in conversation.
Father Joseph Szupa R.I.P. — The Very Reverend Joseph T. Szupa, 51, suddenly fell asleep in the Lord, Sunday, July 10. He had just concluded the 11 a.m. Divine Liturgy at the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Philadelphia, where he served as rector since July 1, 2015.
Father Szupa, a native of Chester, PA, was one of five children born to the late Andrij and Eva (nee Hrebinec) Szupa on May 12, 1965.
He received his elementary education at Holy Ghost Ukrainian Catholic School, Chester, PA; in the fall of 1979 he entered St. Basil Preparatory School in Stamford, CT. After graduation in 1983, and sensing a call to the priesthood, he enrolled in St. Basil’s College Seminary to prepare for ordination.
He completed his undergraduate studies at The Catholic University of America where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy while a seminarian at St. Josaphat Ukrainian Catholic Seminary, Washington, D.C. He continued his matriculation at The Catholic University of America and was awarded a Bachelor of Sacred Theology degree and completed the program of priestly formation at St. Josaphats Seminary.
On Sept. 20, 1992, Father Joseph was ordained a priest in the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception by Metropolitan-Archbishop Stephen Sulyk. The newly-ordained Father Szupa celebrated his Divine Liturgy of Thanksgiving in his home parish, Holy Ghost Ukrainian Catholic Church, Chester, PA.
After ordination, Father Joseph was assigned parochial vicar of the Cathedral parish and also served at St. Andrew in Philadelphia. He also served the faithful in the following New Jersey parishes: St. Nicholas, Passaic; St. Nicholas, Rutherford; St. Vladimir, Elizabeth; and Immaculate Conception, Hillside.
He held the following archieparchial positions: chancellor, member of the college of consultors, member of the archieparchial corporation, member of the presbyteral council, member of the finance council, protopresbyter of the New Jersey deanery, advocate in the tribunal. He also was secretary of the Board of Directors of Ascension Manor, Inc.
Father Joseph is survived by brother Stephen Szupa of Woodlyn, PA, sister Joanne Balandiak and her husband, Peter of Woodlyn, PA; nieces Dawn Marie Mastella, Kaitlyn Elizabeth Szupa, Dana Marie Gaffney; and nephews Kristopher Michael Szupa, and Andrij J. Balandiak. Father Joe is also survived by four great-nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers Michael and Peter.
His body will lie in repose tomorrow (July 14) evening at the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 827 N. Franklin St., Philadelphia from 5:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. . Priestly Parastas will be sung at 7 p.m..
On Friday morning, his body will lie in repose in Holy Myrrh-Bearers Eastern Catholic Church, 900 Fairview Road, Swarthmore, PA from 10 a.m. until the celebration of the Divine Liturgy at 11 a.m. by Metropolitan-Archbishop Stefan Soroka and his brother priests.
Burial will follow at Lawn Croft Cemetery in Linwood, PA.
Gloria Thielking (nee DelBruno) of Havertown died July 8 from serious injuries sustained in a fall at her home on July 6.
She was 80.
Gloria was a long-time volunteer and a former Vice President of Friends of the Grange. She sustained the mansion tours during a period when there were few guides, she oversaw rental events, orchestrated several teas and other social activities at the Grange, and, of course, was a decorator extraordinaire famous for her fabulous bows.
She was a member of the Red Hatters Society, The Rosary Guild at Annunciation BVM, The Annunciation Dine Around group, and the Needlecrafters group at St. Laurence.
Gloria was the beloved wife of the late Stanton Thielking. She was the loving mother of Gloria (Robert Napper) Thielking, Eric (Tracey Bunker) Thielking, Frances (John) Mahoney, Michelle Long Thielking; the loving grandmother of Michael and Brian Long; the dear sister of Frances M. Eidell, Rosemarie V. Jarman.
A viewing will be 6-9 p.m.., Wednesday, July 13, at Donohue Funeral Home, 3300 West Chester Pike, Newtown Square, PA 19073.
A funeral mass will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, July 14, Annunciation BVM, 401 Brookline Blvd, Havertown, 19083.
