Sultan Murad IV banned alcohol, tobacco and coffee in Constantinople. He would prowl the streets and taverns at night in civilian clothes and summarily execute any caught breaking this decree.
He is in the hall of fame of hypocrites as he was an habitual drinker himself and died young of alcoholism.
