Ten Thousand Villages Closing Shops — We took a walk through Media, Pa., today, Jan. 23, and stopped in at Ten Thousand Villages on State Street to learn that all the retail locations will be closed by March 31.
Everything will be online.
It seems short-sighted. We suspect most purchases were impulse buys and that many used excursions to the stores as an excuse to get outside and away from virtual worlds
And they did provide local jobs.
Providing jobs is what company’s mission is, right?
Hopefully, someone i the bean -counting department wakes up.
The upside is that everything was 40 percent off.
Ten Thousand Villages Closing Shops
Providing jobs is not a company’s mission. Turning a profit is.
That said I shop brick and mortar as much as possible and try to always pay in cash.
If a store has online presence only its unlikely I will shop there. If a store doesn’t take cash, again unlikely I will shop there.

Hi, Bill. As far as I know, the jobs at Ten Thousand Villages were mostly volunteer jobs. You say that providing jobs is the primary mission of any company, but I believe the primary mission of Ten Thousand Villages was not providing jobs in the US, but helping fairly-paid artisans and cooperatives to stay afloat. I have known several people who worked at the Media store, and they were all volunteer positions.
Still, I am very sad to see them go. And as you say, the fun of going there was to browse, which is harder to do online and not nearly as much fun.
So, thanks for your article.
Also, I agree with Joseph Dychala. He makes some very good points.
