Transamerica Pyramid William Lawrence Sr Omnibit 6-12-20

The Transamerica Pyramid might be San Francisco’s most famous building but the company for which it is named now headquartered in Cedar Rapids Ia. and with Pyramid’s sale in February is no longer associated with it.

  1. Reading the article about the sale, there are these items:

“The backlash contributed to office construction being limited in San Francisco, a measure that remains in today’s crowded commercial and housing market.”

    and

“The public voted to restrict the construction of office high-rises after that, a limitation that still exists today as the office market grows even more squeezed and commercial rents continue to skyrocket.”

It’s a shame that the article’s author failed to go into any detail about this. Because it’s a great example of the unintended consequences that land-use zoning restrictions have. Preservation zoning laws have the same result, that no one thinks about. Sure, it sounds great to pass a law to restrict adding buildings to a city and changing its skyline, or to pass a law to keep farm property from being developed. But it shows ignorance of economics. If you restrict a good, you will drive its price up. The article’s author does note that “commercial rents continue to skyrocket.” In the case of preservation zoning, the property preserved will likely not provide increased tax revenue to its home municipality. Rent controls do this, too. These things drive prices up, and eventually rents and taxes follow. People looking to rent can’t afford it, property owners see their taxes going up.

But that’s Leftism/Progressivism. Don’t ask if what you do is effective, just worry about whether you feel good doing it.

    1. Good points Brad. You read that closer than I did. I don’t know why any business would want to have an HQ or major facility in a blue voting state.
