It appears we have become two nations — one that seeks to follow dreams and create things to help one’s neighbor, and one that responds to calls of bitterness and vengeance for imaginary wrongs; one that believes food, shelter and health are gifts and the results of the consequences of one’s actions and one that believes these things are “rights” without even pondering their source; one that believes in reason and one that follows fashion without thought; and, most tellingly, one that believes and reveres God and one that boos Him.
Last night, it appears the one that boos God won. Expect life to get a lot harder. Energy will cost more. Freedoms will disappear.
And life will get much more dangerous.
I guess I belong to the nation that believes in consequences for actions.

1)If Obama is as bad as you say, he would never have been elected to begin with.
2) Church and state are supposed to be separated! Don’t try to bring religion into politics and say “if you don’t vote for romney, you don’t love god.” My mom loves god just as much or more than you – so do my cousins. They don’t boo god. And THEY voted for OBAMA
3) Not everyone believes in god.
And don’t say things will get a lot harder. You’ve never had it hard. Things won’t be dangerous. You gave a republican 8 years to screw everything up, give obama 8 years to fix it.
My biggest note: OUR GOVERNMENT WAS FOUNDED UPON SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE! YOU CAN’T SEEM TO UNDERSTAND THAT! BRINGING GOD INTO THIS AND SAYING UNLESS YOU VOTE FOR X YOU DON’T LIKE GOD OR GOD SAYS THIS IS WRONG SO IT SHOULD BE ILLEGAL. KEEP IT SEPERATE! IF YOU KEEP COMBINING THEM, WE’LL HAVE A RELIGION BASED ON THEOCRACY. AND NAME ONE FIRST WORLD COUNTRY LIKE THAT.

My question is this: Did we just give our republic away?

It’s just hubris, mr lawrence, just your own hubris, that makes you declare that because your tea party votes did not win, we are all doomed, and God has been disrespected.
This nation is made of people of other colors than white, and who also believe in the same God you do, yet did not feel represented by the Republican agenda. The Democratic party’s platform was deemed to be the one to take us forward. Your party’s platform was taking us back into the 20th.

It certainly is possible that we Tea Partyers are wrong: that the $16 trillion debt is irrelevant to our standard of living; that Obamacare will neither discourage smart people from entering the field of medicine or continuing to practice it; that Obamacare will not discourage businesses from hiring; and that this same God they worship doesn’t really care how we treat each other.
It is certainly possible that we Tea Partyers are wrong that the motivation of the leadership of the Democrat Party is entirely one of acquiring wealth and power via politics, and has no compunctions about destroying opponents via lies, slander, distortions and exposing secrets that they otherwise claim should be kept.
We shall see. We suspect, though, that the people have lost their power.

Being wrong about your opinions about the debt, or the impact of the ACA, shouldn’t challenge your faith. Jesus would have compassion for both parties, winners and losers. I think he would counsel you to try and keep an open mind and stop demonizing the party that won.
Regarding “acquiring wealth and power via politics …(by) having no compunctions about destroying via lies, slander distortions and exposing secrets that otherwise should be kept” are unfortunately functions of our political process, and have been since its inception. The Dems have no tools in their box that the Repubs don’t.
Indeed, the Fox News channel’s insularity of viewpoints and selective emotion-based polling is being credited with their having been seemingly blindsided by the outcome of this election. If Karl Rove is stammering the night of the election about outcomes and provisional ballots in Ohio, when the rest of the polls indicated since June the actual outcome (Nate Silver’s for one) – it’s time to call a spade a spade, Fox Newspeople.
Give it time Mr Lawrence, and keep up the “we shall see” thinking. I, too, hope for all the things you do regarding our economy. So does the President, and all Democrats. We’re all in this together, and we all have to fight the urge toward cynicism.
Being wrong about the debt doesn’t bother me. Being right does.

Something for you to consider, minority poll watchers were forced out of several precincts in Philadelphia on Election Day, which also had open electioneering for Obama, a violation of state law.
Did this bother you? How would you respond if this occurred in Republican districts? Do you believe there should be consequences for those that allowed this to happen?
