Office Depot Anti-Catholic Bigotry

Office Depot Anti-Catholic BigotryUpdate: Office Depot CEO and Roland Smith has apologized. “We sincerely apologize to Ms. Goldstein for her experience and our initial reaction was not at all related to her religious beliefs,” he said. “We invite her to return to Office Depot if she still wishes to print the flier.”

It should be noted that Office Depot assistant general counsel Robert A. Amicone and corporate spokeswoman Karen Denning initially defended the decision.

Father Frank Pavone of Priests for Life composed a prayer for the elimination of the abortion industry and the conversion of those whose hearts are hardened to support it.

Maria Goldstein thought it would be nice to distribute it at her Catholic parish’s Sunday mass and ordered 500 copies of it at the Office Depot in Schaumburg, Ill.

Office Depot refused do it. It violated corporate policy it claimed. The prayer advocated religious discrimination it claimed. Yes, they actually said that without even comprehending the irony.

And the corporate headquarter people are defending the decision so we can’t blame some misguided store manager.

Pope Francis gets criticized by conservatives for the things he has said about American corporations and that is quite unfair as he is dead right.

Our big businesses are more often than not run by selfish people with distinctly anti-Christian mindsets.

The strident advocacy for gay marriage and the ensuing corporate celebration of the Supreme Court’s gay marriage decision is mind-boggling from the economic standpoint.  It’s not, though, if those that run things think their gravy train will last forever and don’t want to be bound by old-fashioned morality regarding how to treat spouses, employees and others whom they think can’t retaliate.

But gravy trains don’t run forever and consequences are never ultimately escaped.

Ms. Goldstein is preparing legal action against Office Depot. It really doesn’t matter if she is successful in forcing them to do the right thing via this route.

Office Depot will not escape the consequences of its bigotry. The knowledge of what they did will quietly and slowly become known to the tens of millions of Americans who feel the very profitable “non-profit” abortion business is vile and tens of millions of Americans will put Office Depot last on the list when seeking the services it provides. This decision-making change won’t be announced or declared or even be a full-fledged boycott. They will see something they want in an Office Depot ad and they will look for it online or at Staples or at Walmart first.

Yes, shareholders, it will affect the bottom line.

Here is Father Pavone’s pro-life prayer that offended the corporate suits:

Lord, for whom all things are possible,
We are confronted once again today
With the evil of the abortion industry
And the corruption found
In the world’s largest abortion business, Planned Parenthood.

Lord, we pray for all who plan to be parents,
And we ask your mercy on those
Who teach others to reject parenthood.

In the light of your Word, Lord,
We affirm today that children are a blessing from you,
And that the origin of all parenthood
Is likewise in You, the God of life and love.

Therefore, Oh God,
We stand against the evil that has been exposed
In Planned Parenthood
And in the entire abortion industry.

We stand today for the triumph
Of truth over falsehood,
Of light over darkness,
And of life over death.

Bring an end to the killing of children in the womb,
And bring an end to the sale of their body parts.
Bring conversion to all who do this,
And enlightenment to all who advocate it.

Close the doors of the death camps in our midst,
And open the doors of your mercy and healing!
Close the grisly trade in baby body parts,
And open the abundant gifts of your salvation and life!

Hasten the day when our land
Will no longer be stained with innocent blood,
And when the bodies of all your children
Will be raised from the dead
And set free forever.

We pray in the name of Jesus the Lord. Amen!

Hilton Ends Porn Channels

The Hilton hotel chain has removed all porn channels from its hotels in 85 countries. Hilton Ends Porn Channels The Hilton hotel chain has removed all porn channels from its hotels in 85 countries.

Kudos to Hilton.

A campaign by National Center on Sexual Exploitation was what led to the decision but it appears it have been guided as much by a growth in understanding as it was by economic pressure.

Hilton  had in place a serious policy to prevent their hotels being used for sexual exploitation.

“They realized it didn’t make sense to be against that while promoting pornography, which is so closely connected to it,” said Pat Truman, who is the Center’s president and CEO. “Sex traffickers use pornography to sell prostitution. It’s all connected.”

Omni, Drury, Ritz-Carlton, Nordic Choice Hotels, and Marriott have also dropped the porn channels.

The Center’s target now is Cosmopolitan magazine which can be found at the checkout stands at many supermarkets, albeit no more at Walmart which now keeps it behind the counter.

Yelp Billion Dollar Bully

Yelp Billion Dollar BullyA crowdfunded documentary depicting the consumer review site Yelp as a “billion dollar bully” is causing angst among the hipsters.

Yelp is a San Francisco-based firm founded in 2004 that allows customers to post online reviews of restaurants and businesses.

It’s hip, supports Obama, and is used and trusted by millennials. The problem is that it makes its obscene profits selling ads. The documentary claims that it withholds good reviews from businesses that don’t advertise while giving the bad reviews high exposure.

In other news regarding hypocrisy, the hipster news site BuzzFeed is being accused of running favorable stories regarding the Marriott hotel chain, which is a big advertiser.

Patrick Howley of Brietbart.com notes that BuzzFeed has been unremittingly hard on Donald Trump whose hotels compete with Marriott. We kind of think that might be stretching the point. How is BuzzFeed any different than Fox News in that regard?

Still Howley points out that BuzzFeed also pulled a piece criticizing the Monopoly board game, which is produced by BuzzFeed advertiser Hasbro, and also pulled an article that criticized ads for Dove soap, the subsidiary of a site advertiser.

The anti-corporate types sure seem to like corporate money.

Anyway, here is the trailer to Billion Dollar Bully:

Panama Canal Expansion East Coast Port Boom

The Panama Canal expansion in 2016 may shift 10 percent of oceanic container traffic from East Asia to East Coast ports according to C. H. Robinson. Panama Canal Expansion East Coast Port Boom

The expansion will permanently affect the competitive balance between the coasts according to the logistics provider.

“Goods shipped from East Asia through West Coast ports are currently transported by rail and truck as far east as the Ohio River Valley,” says the company website. “The canal’s expansion will permit big, efficient “post-Panamax” container ships—which have two to three times the capacity of current vessels—to reach the East Coast. Those ports will then become more cost competitive because it is cheaper to move cargo by water than over land. West Coast ports, however, will remain the destination of choice for shippers who need to use the fastest routes possible.”

The East Coast ports most likely to benefit will be the New York-New Jersey complex, Norfolk, Savannah and Charleston.

Perfecseal Workers Failed By Union

The Perfecseal plant at 9800 Bustleton Ave., Philadelphia, is being closed and its equipment being shipped to Wisconsin, according to Philly.com. Perfecseal Workers Failed By Union

About 200 union jobs will be lost.
The plant was opened about 60 years ago and acquired by Wisconsin-based Bemis Healthcare Packaging in 1986.

The Philly equipment will be used for an upgraded factory in the new right-to-work state. About 160 jobs will be created in Wisconsin.
Bemis, a publicly traded company with rising profits,  has shut factories in Brazil and Mexico along with ones in Minnesota and Ohio to bring the work to the Badger State.

Mondelez Workers Failed By Union

Mondelez Workers Failed By UnionMondelez, the Illinois food giant that was spun off of Kraft Foods Inc. in  2012  shut its bakery at Roosevelt Boulevard and Byberry Road last week reported today’s (July 1) Philadelphia Inquirer.

So 350 workers union workers are out of work along with the  hundreds of drivers who shipped its products under the Nabisco, Standard Brands and Kraft corporate labels.

The suspicion is that the products will now be made at a government-subsidized, largely-automated, multimillion-dollar facility in Monterey, Mexico, where the pay is not $24 per hour and benefits.

Wonder when the union rank and file is going to wake up to the reality that the money automatically deducted from their paychecks is used to lobby for causes that are anything but in their interests.

Wonder when it is is going to dawn on them that the most successful political organizations are those whose officers are paid with dues collected voluntarily and not automatically.

Wonder when it’s going to dawn on them that the power to withhold a contribution is a pretty strong bargaining chip.

Union Minimum Wage Exemption

"The gentlemen in Washington seem to genuinely believe that if they measure their penises in picas they’ll all be Jonah Falcon — in reality, their interns won’t notice any difference," Williamson wrote. The point can't be made any better -- except maybe by the union leaders who say they will fight for their members to be paid less than minimum wage. Union Minimum Wage Exemption. Union Minimum Wage ExemptionThe Los Angeles City Council, May 19, on a 14-1 vote passed a plan to raise the minimum wage from $9 to $15 per hour by 2020.

The local unions are demanding to be exempt from the law.

How far labor has fallen. The message is now join us and  we will fight to get you below minimum wage jobs.

Why they are doing this is obvious. Many businesses will no longer be profitable when forced to pay the newly mandated wages hence they will either:

  • Close
  • Move
  • Layoff workers to reach an employee level that they can afford. This means that the employees who remain will be expected to work harder for their paycheck
  • Automate.

It is feared that Hollywood is going to be especially affected.

Really stupid people are running government. Really stupid.

Money is a useful, beneficial communications tool. It is nothing more. It is not magic. It is not something to be worshiped. It does not automatically solve problems, despite what the progressive and “social justice” warrior types think.

Kevin D. Williamson of National Review, who once edited the Main Line Times, spells it out wonderfully in his article Bernie Sanders’s Dark Age Economics, which concerns the Vermont senator’s plan for a national minimum wage.

“The gentlemen in Washington seem to genuinely believe that if they measure their penises in picas they’ll all be Jonah Falcon — in reality, their interns won’t notice any difference,” Williamson wrote.
