After a mass shooting at a Quebec City mosque on Jan. 29 that left six dead and 19 injured — how did that happen anyway, don’t they have gun control in Canada?? — she decided to show solidarity by visiting a mosque in Toronto.

So what happened? They made the province’s leading politician put on a head covering and sit on a rickety folding chair way back in a corner well behind the men. If a woman is in front of a man as he is praying, his prayer is invalidated, after all.

Trump’s order suspends visas and other immigration benefits for 90-days for those seeking entrance from Iran, Iraq, Syria, Sudan, Libya, Yemen and Somali, while the Secretary of Homeland Security creates a system ensuring that those seeking entrance are who they claim they are and are not security or public safety threats.

He says he  sent it off to NeverTrump Republican pundit Rick Wilson who not merely believed it but sent it to the CIA.

And they put it in an official classified intelligence report on Russian involvement in the election.

An internet joke. The CIA may have  treated an internet joke as real intelligence.

If they told us a particular country had WMDs, should we trust them enough to invade?

President Trump is going to have some serious house cleaning to do with regard to our national “intelligence” services.

The government-connected media has been filling the airwaves all week with reports that Russia “hacked” our election. It’s based on CIA claims that leave dupes with the implicit conclusion that Donald Trump is not a legitimate president.

“Russia’s goals were to undermine public faith in the US democratic process, denigrate Secretary Clinton, and harm her electability and potential presidency,” according to the government (i.e. Obama Administration) report. “We further assess Putin and the Russian Government developed a clear preference for President-elect Trump. We have high confidence in these judgments.”

The claim has seriously underwhelmed cyber security people.

And the guy who is taking over in a couple of weeks is not happy so expect a lot of out-of-work spy types.

What should be especially disconcerting to the intelligence community is that conservatives who have had an almost knee-jerk instinct to defend it are now starting to say, well, maybe the progressives have a point about them.

Especially damning is the realization that the “intelligence” agencies tasked to understand what is going on in the world are either clueless about what is happening outside the little swamp in which they live, or they are so terrified of losing their wealth and power they are resorting to desperate measures to undermine a duly elected president.

If you are really concerned as to whether the Russians “hacked” into the Democrat National Committee database to reveal that Hillary Clinton told foreign groups that her campaign promises are lies and had squelched a primary opponent via unfair party manipulation, ask yourself if you’d rather had not known she did these things.

Ask yourself  if the intelligence community was really concerned about security why did it tolerate the Secretary of State having a private email server not subject to government oversight and in violation of every protocol imaginable, not to mention common sense.

Ask yourself why the Russians (and the Saudis and the Chinese) wouldn’t want someone to whom they siphoned millions for tangible benefits.

Ask yourself why the Democrat Party would twist arms so badly to get this person as their nominee.

Jan. 20 can’t come soon enough.

In a bizarre tone-deaf move, the GOP controlled Congress will vote today Jan. 3, on whether to gut the Office of Congressional Ethics. It will be one of the first acts in the new reign of Republican power in D.C.

Way to prioritize.

An amendment  by Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-Va6) passed the GOP caucus, yesterday that will change the body’s name to Office of Congressional Complaint Review, strip it of its independence, block it from investigating any wrongdoing that occurred prior to 2011, and prevent it from releasing its findings to the public, without the authorization of the House Committee on Ethics. It would also prevent the panel from alerting law enforcement to criminal activity without the approval of the House committee.

Congratulations Goodlatte, you are making Nancy Pelosi look good, a frankly amazing feat.

Pointless Pettiness Is Bad Politics

Pointless pettiness is bad politics.

The Pennsylvania Constitution mandates that judges retire at age 70. Some thought that was too early and wanted to make it age 75. The amendment process requires one of the legislative chambers — both of which have been under Republican control since 2011 — to write the amendment. It is then advertised in at least two newspapers in every county at least three months before the next general election. It then must be passed again via simple majority by both chambers in the next session. The wording is then placed on a ballot as a referendum giving the general public final say.

The chambers approved this:  Shall the Pennsylvania Constitution be amended to require that justices of the Supreme Court, judges and justices of the peace (known as magisterial district judges) be retired on the last day of the calendar year in which they attain the age of 75 years, instead of the current requirement that they be retired on the last day of the calendar year in which they attain the age of 70?

The referendum was scheduled for the April 26 primary and the mandated advertising — costing the public $1.3 million  — was performed.

Pointless Pettiness Is Bad PoliticsThe Senate leadership had second thoughts, however. Cynics are saying they feared the public might vote it down which would have forced the removal of Chief Justice Thomas Saylor, a Republican, giving the Democrats control of the state Supreme Court.

So they filed a legal challenge claiming the words were too confusing. The state Supreme Court laughed and threw it out.

The legislature then passed resolutions, April 6 and April 11 invalidating  the election two weeks away. They  re-wrote the amendment for the Nov. 8 general election as:  Shall the Pennsylvania Constitution be amended to require that justices, judges and justices of the peace be retired on the last day of the calendar year in which they attain the age of 75 years.

Democrats  filed a legal challenge saying the delay was unconstitutional because the legislation was not presented to Gov. Wolf as required. Commonwealth Court rejected the argument.

They filed another challenge saying the delay illegal because it was political in nature. Commonwealth Court rejected this claim on July 6.

A challenged was filed on July 21 by former Supreme Court justices Ronald Castille and Stephen Zappala Sr, and Philadelphia attorney Richard Sprague saying the new wording was deceitful.

Supreme Court took the case and voted 3-3 which left the wording as the short version. Saylor appropriately recused himself.

Yesterday, Sept. 16, the court ruled 4-2 that the case can’t be reconsidered, hence the short version without the mention of an existing mandated retirement age is what the voters will see.

The Court got it right with the last argument. It isn’t their job to determine the wording of amendments. On the other hand, it is judiciary’s job to judge process and if constitutional amendments require legislative votes in consecutive sessions with advertising in between, then one wonders how changes in the wording can be made at the last minute.

And what’s it say about our solons if they can’t get it right in the first place?

The word changes are pointless gamesmanship and political pettiness at the highest level. This stuff always backfires especially when one learns it has wasted $1.3 million of our money.

And, for what it’s worth, the retirement age should not be increased. Vote this amendment down on Nov. 8.

In the search for revenue to cover the General Assembly’s insatiable need for more spending, the legislature looked for new sources of revenue and taxes. Ignoring the $200 million that they borrowed from other funds, the ill-conceived choices they made are already falling through. Revenue Scheme Failing In Pa.

Lawmakers thought they had a sure winner when they decided to sell casinos licenses to sell alcohol between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m.; they were wrong. Casinos have scoffed at the $1 million license fee. One casino spokesman stated that they likely wouldn’t take the license if it was free. This lack of interest from casinos for the 24-hour liquor licenses creates an immediate $12 million hole.

The second hole opening up is even more tragic. In their abject greed, the General Assembly levied a 40 percent wholesale tax on electronic cigarette and “vaping” supplies. Adding insult to injury, the new tax applies to merchandise that is already in stock. As one small business owner noted:

“‘It’s almost as if the tax was designed to kill small business,’ said Chris Hughes, owner of Fat Cat Vapor Shop in Montoursville.

“Hughes estimated that he would have to cut the state a $40,000 check for the $100,000 in inventory he currently has on hand.”

Because Mr. Hughes does not have the ability to send the government a $40,000, he is liquidating his inventory and going out of business. Now the state will lose the tax revenue Mr. Hughes’s business was generating and the new taxes the General Assembly had counted on to fill in the budget deficit.

These problems could have been avoided if the legislature and the Governor had made an attempt to rein in spending. Instead, they added to the corporate welfare budget at the expense of small businesses. Now business owners like Mr. Hughes closing shop because of legislative greed.

Libertarian Petitions Confiscated In Delco — In an exceedingly boneheaded move, Saturday evening (July 16), Delaware County Park Police stopped Libertarians from circulating petitions for 7th District congressional candidate Patrick Henry Sellers in the county’s Rose Tree Park in Upper Providence. Police confiscated the petitions and later chased down the circulators with intent to cite them for disorderly conduct. Libertarian Petitions Confiscated In Delco

“I was asked to leave the park and complied,” said Dale Kerns.  “I went to (the nearby) Wawa. After leaving Wawa on 252 by the Route 1 bypass, the Park Police pulled me over outside their jurisdiction on Route 1 heading toward the Blue Route.”

The encounter shortly before 8 p.m. was recorded by Kerns. One of the  officers says the action was taken at the behest of County Council member Mario Civera just after explaining why the citation is being issued.

Tough break, kid. You are young and there are many other police departments in the nation.

Solicitation is prohibited in county parks albeit this is generally understood to be for commercial matters and not for things like collecting signatures for candidate petitions.

Regardless, that the petitions were confiscated is drastically overstepping all reasonable bounds of law enforcement.

At least American law enforcement.

Kerns says that police ultimately decided not to file the criminal citations but they have yet to return his petitions with the names he collected.

He says he has been in contact with a civil rights attorney.

Among those with whom Sellers will be contending this fall — assuming he gets enough signatures to get on the ballot — will be GOP incumbent Pat Meehan.

I plan on voting for Meehan, but then I planned on voting for him in the primary too.

He doesn’t make it easy.

Bathroom Bills Back In Pa As SB 1306 And SB 1307 — Public outcry stopped  pending Pennsylvania legislation that would open ladies rooms and girls sports teams to men but the termites in Harrisburg never sleep and new bills were quickly introduced to  catch the sane occupants of the Keystone State off guard.

Senate Bill 974 hasn’t moved since Sept. 15 and a resolution ending further consideration on HB 1510, was passed June 7 after this garbage crept into the public conscience.

So on June 10, SB 1306 and SB 1307 were introduced by Republican zealots that, like SB 974, would prohibit “sexual orientation, gender identity or expression” from discrimination in “public accommodations” like, well, public restrooms.

And school showers.

And school sports teams.

And it would add “sexual orientation” and “gender identity or expression” to the protected classes making it difficult for businesses to fire or discipline those describing themselves as gay or transgendered or whatever.

The prime sponsor of both bills is Sen. Pat Browne, a Republican who represents the 16th District which is in Lehigh County, and who is also the prime sponsor of SB 974.

Brown is being strongly backed by former conservative hero Scott Wagner, a Republican who represents the 28th district which is York County.

SB 1307 adds to the law the phrasing Public policies, reflecting an open and welcoming environment and ensuring equal opportunity, foster economic growth and prosperity which benefit the inhabitants of this Commonwealth. Conversely, the absence of nondiscrimination protections hinder efforts to recruit and retain the diversity of talented individuals and successful enterprises required for a thriving economy and strong public sector on which the inhabitants of this Commonwealth depend.

Sen. Wagner, are you saying that if a guy wearing fishnet stockings comes to you asking to drive one of your trash trucks, there is policy that now prevents you from hiring him?

This is not true.

The only thing Senator that would now prevent you from hiring such a man is your own prejudices. Please don’t project them on to the rest of us.

Protected classes do not foster economic growth and prosperity. They hurt economic growth and prosperity. The goal should not be to expand them but to eliminate them.
