Good Government Of Springfield

Good Government Of Springfield SEPTA Tree Removal

Bad government has to be condemned but that means good government has to be praised.

Dead tree the unit block of North Rolling Road in Springfield, Pa. became an eyesore and a bit of danger. The trees were on government property — a township-owned traffic island and land belong to SEPTA.

Township officials were notified on Aug. 19.

The spruce on the traffic island came down on Aug. 22.

The SEPTA oaks came down today, Oct. 1.

Kudos to Jim Merkin, Mike Puppio and especially commissioner Bob Layden.

John Kane Compensation Challenge

We were challenged concerning the $277,000 taxable compensation we reported John Kane, who is the Democrat’s nominee for the 26th District State Senate race,  was receiving as business manager of Plumber’s Local 690 of Philadelphia and Vicinity.

Here you go.

Kane receives $156,537 in salary for his job as business manager and $119,213 as co-chairman of the union’s vacation fund, as per the IRS 990 form that is required to be filed by the vacation fund.

Vacation fund. He is taking $119,213 for running the vacation fund. Don’t you think this  be part of his already well-compensated job as the union’s business manager?

And if we are reading the 990 correctly he is only working one hour a week at it.

LOL. You still want to contribute to his campaign?

Kane says he will continue taking the money even if he should win the seat, which comes with a $84,012 salary and very nice benefits.

People like Kane are what make the rest of us poor.

Kane is seeking the seat being vacated by Republican Ted Erickson, a decent, honest guy. The Republican nominee is Delaware County Councilman Tom McGarrigle, another decent, honest guy who grew up in Springfield, attended a public vocational high school and runs a well-liked garage.

And for the rank and file of Local 690:  here is a list of the salaries of your leaders, which includes $1,431 in benefits for Kane not mentioned on the 990 form.

Note seven of them are making six figures. Are you really getting your money’s worth? Don’t think it would nice if you could actually withhold your dues rather than having them automatically deducted? You think maybe you might get better representation if you had this ability?

Dem Delaware County Hypocrisy

Some tidbits recently gleaned concerning this November’s battle for the Pennsylvania Legislature reveal that when it comes to hypocrisy the Keystone State’s Democrats take second place to no one.

The Democrats nominee to fill the 26th District Senate Seat being vacated by Republican Ted Erickson is John Kane, who is business manager of Plumber’s Local #690. Kane, gritty man of the people, has a taxable income of $277,000.

Sure is sweet to be a union official. He says he is not quitting if he should win the race and will keep the $80,000 salary that comes with the seat along with the other bennies.

That wouldn’t quite make him a one percenter but it would likely put him in the 2 percenter category, which is where he probably is now.

His opponent is Delaware County Councilman Tom McGarrigle, who grew up in Springfield, attended a public vocational high school and runs a well-liked garage.

Meanwhile, the D’s picked a full-blown one-percenter to challenge long-time incumbent Bill Adolph for the 165th District seat in the State House.

The candidate, Charles Hadley, is a retired venture capitalist from Radnor who apparently has a net worth of over $100 million.

If you want your freedom and don’t want to live in a land where you have to kiss the rings of the rich and connected vote Republican.

30 Million Dollars Found Money

30 Million Dollars Found Money

30 Million Dollars Found Money if Pennsylvania changes the law.

The Springfield School (Pa) District is pushing for a new $150 million high school that would add about $400 to the already crushing  and ever-increasing school property tax for the average homeowner.

Leaving aside the dubious necessity of the building, that cost could be cut by $30 million almost literally overnight simply by putting some ink on paper — or erasing some off.

Pennsylvania’s prevailing wage law adds 20 percent to cost of all public construction projects for absolutely no reason other than to enrich those whose wealth comes from playing politics and it is these who are the true “1% ers”.

So why not scrap a law that impoverishes 99 percent of us? Because 99 percent of us don’t like to play politics. We better learn. Springfield residents contact your state representative Bill Adolph (R-165), who has quite a bit of say in what goes on in Harrisburg, and let him know you can’t hurt anymore. Let him know your grandparents can’t hurt anymore. Let him know your children can’t hurt anymore.

Dangerous Tree Comes Down

Dangerous Tree Comes Down

The dead spruce tree on the township owned traffic island at the northern tip of Windsor Circle in Springfield, Pa. is down and ready to be hauled away by MG Tree Service as this is typed (8:36 a.m., Aug. 22).

Kudos Commissioner Bob Layden and Mike Puppio.

The dead oak trees on the nearby SEPTA property remain. While SEPTA is the agency responsible responsible for their removal, we expect the township is prompting them.

Several large trees are dead or nearly so in the unit block of North Rolling Road in Springfield Pa in Delaware County.

One is a spruce tree on a township-owned traffic island at the northern tip of Windsor Circle.

Two are oak trees on SEPTA land bordering the Route 101 Trolley Line.

It would be a lot wiser for the trees to be removed now before they crush a car (or pedestrian) or simply fall and block the well-traveled road for a day.

Three of the spruces have already fallen from the traffic island damaging private property.

This dead and dangerous oak tree on the SEPTA land on North Rolling Road, Springfield has been known to block the sidewalk with its fallen limbs.

Another dead or near-dead tree on the SEPTA land. What would the township do if these were on private residences?
