Jefferson Davis was president of the Confederacy. Jefferson Davis was also the first commander of the Department of Alaska after the territory was purchased from Russia in 1867. They were different Jefferson Davis, of course.
The Alaska Davis was a Union general who served on Sherman’s March to the Sea. He blamed his unfortunate name from keeping him from getting the rank he deserved. . Others say, however, it was because he was an obnoxious ass who shot his commanding officer during an argument.
