The growth in physicians is practically flat since 1976.
Meanwhile, those number of those who push the paper to make sure all i’s are dotted have exploded.
Crossing i’s does not equate to diagnosing a brain tumor and treating it.
And these paper pushers do not come free. Actually, they make a pretty nice buck whether they work for an insurance company or the government or a medical facility trying to keep insurance companies and the government off their back.
Health Cost Hike No Mystery
This proliferation of administrators is part of the story, but there’s also Big Pharma’s aggressive hyping of new drugs that may or may not be noticeably better than what they replace. Big Pharma’s problem is that the older ones are out of patent protection, or will be soon.
Another part of the problem is our increasing consumption of junkier and junkier foods. Does anyone really need “Macaroni Bites”, that is, breaded and deep-fried Kraft Dinner? Do children need to eat cupcakes topped with a mountain of bilious blue frosting at birthday parties? One would think we’d be healthier and need fewer doctor visits and medications if we quit eating that awful stuff. Not saying it should be outlawed, but definitely recommending a bit more mindfulness at the drive-thru’s order screen.
That is very true.
Great point, Mary
