Due to the demand for cadavers for anatomical study several of the Indian graves were robbed and their bodies acquired by doctors. One of those lucky medical men was William Worrall Mayo who had the skeleton of Mahpya Akan Nazin cleaned, dried and varnished. He kept it in an iron kettle in his office and used it to give his sons anatomy lessons.

Mayo would go on to found the Mayo Clinc. The clinic eventually acquired Mahpya Akan Nazin bones and kept them until finally returning them for reburial to the Dakota tribe shortly before the turn of the Millennium.
