The Radical History of Labor Day

The Radical History of Labor Day

By Bob Small

When my wife and I worked as State of Pennsylvania drones, one of us usually marched in the Philly Labor Day parade, to show solidarity with our union, the Pennsylvania Social Services Union a.k.a PSSU.

Exactly how did all this Labor Day marching get started?

Matthew Maguire and Peter Mcguire conspired to create Labor Day, and the first Labor Day parade was held in New York City in 1882.

Theses articles, here and here, point to Matthew Maguire not being granted “Father of Labor Day” status due to his strong socialist leanings, including being the Socialist Party candidate for president in 1896.

Grover Cleveland made Labor Day a federal holiday in 1896, hoping to make amends for sending in the military to squash the Pullman Railway strike.

Grover Cleveland did not become the first president to serve three non-consecutive term However, Grover Cleveland remains the only President to serve two non-consecutive terms. That could change next year.

Grover Cleveland jailed socialist Eugene Debs, who then ran for president from jail.

Eugene Debs: The Socialist Who Ran for President From Prison – Men

Both of the purported founders of Labor Day are buried in New Jersey. The Peter J. Mcguire Memorial and Gravesite lies in Pennsauken.

The Matthew Maguire gravesite, sans museum, lies in the Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Totawa.

The Department of Labor was founded on March 4, 1913, by President William Howard Taft, on his last day of office.

For a more philosophical discussion of Labor Day and the new socialism from an Austrian perspective, see this article from the Mises Institute.

The author proposes that “over the past thirty years, international bureaucracies have played a growing role in making the world a better place for socialism.”

Nowadays, rather than discuss the Pullman strike of 1894, we discuss Labor Day sales and barbecues, and we no longer march. One might say capitalism has won.

The Old Has Passed Away

The Old Has Passed Away — The fulfillment of the law is Christ himself, who does not so much as lead us away from the letter as lift us up in its spirit. For the law’s consummation was this, that the very lawgiver accomplished His work and changed letter into spirit summing everything up in Himself and, though subject to the law living by grace. He subordinated the law, yet harmoniously united grace with it, not confusing the distinctive characteristics of the one with the other but effecing the transition in a way most fitting for God. He changed whatever was burdensome, servile and oppressive to what is light and liberating, so that we should be enslaved no longer under the elemental spirits of the world, as the Apostle says, nor held fast as bondservants under the letter of the law.

Justly, then, do we celebrate this mystery since it signifies for us a double grace. We are led toward the truth, and we are led away from our condition of slavery to the letter of the law.

How can this be? Darkness yields before the coming fo the light, and grace exchanges legalism for freedom. But midway between the tow stands today’s mystery at the frontier where types and symbols give way to reality and the old is replaced by the new.

Therefore let all creation sing and dance and unite to make worthy contribution to the celebration of this day. Let there be one common festival for saints in heaven and men on earth. Let everything, mundane things and those above, join in festive celebration.

Today this created world is raised to the dignity of a holy place for Him who made all things. The creature is newly prepared to be a divine dwelling place for the Creator.

Chester County Prison Escape Raises Questions; Cavalcante On Camera This A.M. — Chester County Prison escapee and multiple murderer Danelo Cavalcante was caught on camera at 12:20 this morning, Sept. 2, and police are investigating the area.

Cavalcante also reportedly broke into a home to steal food.

Cavalcante, 34, was convicted of first-degree murder, Aug. 16, for the April 2021 stabbing of Deborah Brandao, his ex-girlfriend, and sentenced to life in prison.

He was also wanted for murder in his native Brazil.

Cavalcante was being held at the 1,100 inmate county facility in Pocopson awaiting transfer to a state prison.

He apparently just walked out even being videoed by the surveillance system. An alarm wasn’t sounded for several hours.

The prison is overseen by a board consisting of the Chester County Commissioners, District Attorney Deborah Ryan, Sheriff Fredda Maddox, the county controller and the president judge of Common Pleas Court who is John L. Hall.

It is required to meet monthly and at least twice on site at the prison.

The prison had been reportedly suffering a shortage of correctional staff and Warden Ronald M. Phillips was placed on administrative leave in July.

Phillips was appointed warden in October 2020 following the retirement of long-time warden Ed McFadden. He started at the prision in 1983 and had been deputy warden under McFadden.

Cavalcante’s escape occurred the day after Phillips’ official retirement.

Howard Holland, the former police chief of Downingtown, is interim warden.

If Chester County still had the Sheriff Office’s K-9 detachment Cavalcante would have been rounded up within hours.

Competence matters.

And why are there vacancies among the prison staff?

Drexel Hill ShopRite Reopening

Drexel Hill ShopRite Reopening — The ShopRite on State Road in Drexel Hill had its grand reopening 9 o’clock this morning, Sept. 1. It was thronged and parking spots were hard to find. The aisles were wider and things were shinier but we kind of miss the old store.

Fayette County Election Machine Update

Fayette County Election Machine Update — A request for an emergency injunction was denied this afternoon, Aug. 31, by Fayette County (Pa) Common Pleas Court Judge John F. Wagner to prevent voting machines and other materials from being flown away to who knows where.

Wagner cited lack of standing by plaintiffs, said plaintiff Gregory Stenstrom.

Stenstrom, an election integrity activist from Delaware County, filed jointly with Jon R. Marrietta, Jr.

Marrietta was a candidate in the May 16 Republican primary battle for Fayette County commissioner.

Marrietta’s 5,206 tally was 121 behind Scott Dunn and 554 behind Dave Lohr.

The top two advance to November.

Wagner denied the injunction request.

He told the county representatives, however, “I don’t need to issue you an order to tell you that no election machines or materials are to leave Fayette County.”

Stenstrom said that multiple whistleblowers reported that a medium-sized cargo jet and Gov. Josh Shapiro’s Beech King Air made unscheduled landings about 9:30 a.m. at Connellsville Airport, and that aircrews said they were there to load county election materials onto the cargo jet.

Shapiro was supposedly attending an unpublicized meeting regarding a project, said Stenstrom.

He was reportedly at the meeting for a short time then disappeared for about four hours.

The planes were flown to Arnold Palmer Airport in Latrobe about 25 miles away, Stenstrom says.

The county says the error rate in the May 16 primary for six selected precincts was 1 of 1,489 Republican ballots or .07 percent.

Stenstrom and Marrietta say the error rate was 9.09 percent for mail-in ballots and 1 percent for in-person ballots for an aggregate of 1.72 percent. They say the law requires a county-wide recount for an error rate over .5 percent.

They had asked that certification of the primary be delayed but the county board of elections certified the results last night in an unadvertised meeting.

Stenstrom says this violated the Sunshine Act.

He said they will be appealing to Commonwealth Court.

Stenstrom said he is helping Marrietta because of his integrity and courage.
